If you like, how about taking the kid in your reluctant paragraph and telling me a story about how he thinks nobody respects him? After all, our reactions are always a response to the "back story" and I think if you concentrated on the "back story" of your characters-- at least in your head -- you make them more consistent characters. Actors often create whole stories for their characters just to become consistent in their actions/reactions. It should work for you. Just a sketch of events and perhaps a couple of descriptive scenes will do. (Naturally you are always free to turn down the assignment).
