A polio attack at age nine crippled his legs. Doctors doubted that he would ever walk again. His mother, refusing to heed their ominous predictions, encouraged him to regularly exercise. Twelve years later he rewarded her confidence when he won the gold medal for high jump at the Helsinki Olympics. His name was Walter Davis.
