Billboards
reflections as I drove past my old childhood haunts.

Billboards

Billboard life
Stuck in time,
Saying the same old thing-
No time for more
Than a frozen smile
As life rushes past.

Memories overflow into empty fields,
Crossroads I mistook for home,
Familiar turns unpeopled.
See-
there goes my childhood,
Eden by the roadside,
Falling star,
Eagle’s nest.
I cannot see the lake
But I know it’s still there,
Just beyond those trees.
I walked miles of that sandy shore once,
Footsteps erased by storms.

I am stuck in time,
Watching people come and go
While I stand still.
They fly away,
Ghosts whispering in my hair,
Cameo shots of a life
I watch but cannot touch.
