Chapter 12
Trevor called Maggie and asked if he could look at the Stevens home again. "We have started to pack things up. We are going to have a rummage sale if a few weeks. You are welcome to look at anything you want. Do you have something particular you want to look for?" She asked. "Not really. I haven't been in the house since that first few weeks. If you have been going through anything maybe there is something that was missed." She agreed to come over and let him in. "Detective, tell me where we are in this investigation? Are we any closer to finding out who killed my brother and is family?" Maggie was following him up the stairs. In Kelly's room nothing had been changed. "Is this the room of a 14 year old teenage girl?" He walked to the closet and opened the door. All the dresses were hung neatly, evenly spaced on the wooden pole. "Debra told me that Kelly changed. She said Kelly was pleasant, helpful and quiet. She stayed in her room except for dinner and never complained about cleaning up." Trevor sat on the bed, Maggie sat on the chair by the desk. "Maggie I know Kelly was pregnant." Maggie was silent for a moment, then she spoke, "I know you asked me about it awhile ago, but when you didn't bring it up, I thought you might have forgotten about it." "No, I needed confirmation. You said she didn't go to her regular doctor so I am guessing it was one out of town." Maggie nodded. "Then she did talk to you about it?" "Debra told me about Kelly and asked if I thought one of the relatives would take her until the baby was born and she could give it up for adoption. I told her about a cousin I was close to in California. I said I would call if she wanted me to. She told me to wait. Karl was going to work with the father of the boy and see if he would pay for her care." "That was the last time you and Mrs. Stevens had talked about it?" She nodded. "Did you observe anything between Kelly and the family?" "No, we saw the four of them at church, but Kelly didn't attend. Debra said she wasn't feeling well. Another time she was spending the night with her girlfriend. Karl never mentioned her name at all. I didn't press." Trevor looked through the notebooks that were still in the room. The team had done a good job. He could see the residue of powder where they lifted any indentations. "Thank you, I can't see anything here that is going to help me find her killer. Have you talked to Calvin?" "He called me the other day and asked when we were having the sale and if I thought there would be a lot of money from an estate sale. He is waiting for the probate to come through to see what he gets from the estate." Trevor stopped at the door before they stepped out to the porch, "Maggie, do you have and suspicion that he might be involved in this?" She didn't speak for a moment then looked at him, "Off the record?" "Sure." "I think he knows exactly who is involved with this. He also knows how long the arm of that family may be and he isn't willing to take the chance that it can reach him. After seeing what happened to his family, he is keeping quiet. I doubt you will ever get him to say anything that will point a finger to any of his friends. Detective, I have to agree with him. Someone wanted Kelly gone and was willing to take the whole family out to keep the incident quiet forever." "Maggie, since we are off the record so to speak, has anyone approched or called you about this?" She stood up and walked to the window. "Yes." She turned and went down the stairs. In the living room she turned. "I got a phone call and was told if we knew anything that might help the police find the killer we had better keep our mouths shut. I don't know anything, I don't want to know anything. I don't know that I want to be involved in discovering who ordered this." "You are probably right. On the other hand, if someone doesn't stop this kind of thing, it will just continue to grow until the whole of Portland will be like a "Little Chicago" under Mob rule." He pulled the front door closed behind them and gave it a rattle to make sure it was locked. "I don't want to be an Elliot Ness, but someone has to stand up to them."
