The Masked Marauder

It was Monday night and we were cuddled in front of the T.V.,
With tea and shortcakes, we watched “Little House on the Prairie”.
Then we heard footsteps going up the wall and on the rooftop.
Daddy worked nights and we were alone, so Mom called the cops.

“What is your emergency?”, the officer said on the phone,
“There’s a man on my roof and me and my girls are alone!”
“Lock your doors ma’am and stay on the phone with me,
Don’t worry, a patrol is coming and will be there in a jiffy.”

We were scared spitless hearing the banging and scratching.
While the thief was on the roof with heinous plans a hatching.
Red lights were flashing and then we heard the police car siren,
The cops are here! They’ll stop what this burglar’s conspiring!

The chief himself was in our front yard shining his spotlight,
The officers there for backup howled in laughter at the sight.
“Girls,", said the chief, "Tell me what you all see up over there.”
Up on the roof was biggest raccoon we’d ever seen anywhere.

"Hey Chief! Do we cuff him or do we read him his rights?"
"Since he's wearing his prison suit he'll save us time alright!"
"Thanks for coming officers.", said Mom who hurried inside.
We watched them crate the raccoon then take him for a ride.

Later when Daddy came home from work at eleven thirty,
He asked what we did tonight and we left the room in a hurry.
“Well", said Mom, "we had company here for a little while….”
“Save it Hon. I spoke to the chief”, said Daddy with a smile.
