Brian sat down at his computer. This time he was not going to play cards. This was something he hoped would be more interesting. Greta told him how to do it. Type in the address, choose a handle and get started.
It would be a lot of fun, she assured him. He would meet people who had the same interests he had. It would be a way to use up the long hours waiting for the cast to be taken off his leg, anyway.
Like magic a screen came up. Following directions he signed on and became a new member.
He spent the morning reading and emailing people he never heard of before. And they emailed him back! Amazing!
He spent the afternoon writing a short story and posting it. Would they like it? Would he hear from anybody? This was exciting!
He awaited comments and he was not disappointed. People liked his story especially the surprise ending when the new school teacher turned out to have been a space alien all along. This was great; this was what he had been missing! He could hardly wait until morning to start again.
In dawn’s early light he went to the computer. Yes! More emails. Click, click. Ah the one he was hoping to see; an email from Arakun, who proclaimed herself a twisted raccoon.
When he saw the message: Congratulations! Your story is the winner in yesterday’s contest, he clapped his hands like a little kid! Yes! This was what had been missing, all right. It was almost worth breaking his leg, if it led to finding WDC and all these new friends!
