The Forties

Strains of clarinet
Charmed like a snake
Into the smoke-filled air
Suited sultans pursued
Shoulder padded sirens
With polished manners
And ballroom prowess
Bands played requests
To make lovers unite
As dresses glittered
Like stars within
Tasteful clubs
Of the forties
