AMENDS: a sonnet
No cancer can be cured by just a pill? A moment of love cannot wash neglect. A single step does not take up the hill. Charity can’t save a murder suspect. A life full of sin can’t be wished away. A smile cannot lessen the pain of knife. Without a candle there can’t be a ray. Amends cannot absolve unfaithful wife. My friend, better be watchful and don’t fall In the dark and deep stinking pit of hell. Once there, the entreaties will fail on all. How to escape from there no one can tell. Why not follow the straight and simple way? Let not the wayside charms lead you astray. M C Gupta 16 August 2009
