What does it take to become a great person in the world? Not only existing, but a benefit to those around you. A source of guidance, support, and leadership when the time comes. If I could think of all the basic virtues required of such a person, what would they be? Below, I’ve written the seven that have come to mind in what I believe to be their order of importance...

COURAGE/HEART

I believe the greatest saboteur of all our goals and dreams in life is fear. The fear to be ourselves. The fear of confrontation with other people. The fear of independence, the fear of the unknown, the fear of risk, the fear of opposition and resistance, and the fear of the truth. Fear has a thousand faces. Everyday we confront some aspect of our fear, whether great or small. And just as so, how we combat these fears tells much of how we live our lives. Do we confront it? Do we go around it? Do we seek to compromise? Do we run from it? Many times, fear makes us compromise or completely deter from our original goals. Courage is the virtue I hold highest of all. Courage to act. Courage to defy. Courage to remain true to the course no matter what lands before you. To carry on even if it means doing so alone. Courage can also be defined as Heart, for it is the drive that pushes you through all opposition. The resilience in the face of all adversity.

INTEGRITY/MORALS

Courage gives you the strength to accomplish your goals, and the drive to do so in the face of opposition. Integrity is those inner values that define you, personally. They are your beliefs. The moral guiding system that determines how you will interact with all things in your life. You have goals; how do you go about accomplishing them? Do you sacrifice your own beliefs in order to advance a step, or do you sacrifice advancing your goal in order to maintain your integrity? Will you go the right way or the wrong way? What does right and wrong mean to you? Integrity is your personal code of ethics which guides you through life’s many, many decisions. It’s your character. It’s who you are. To enter a situation without a clear sense of identity leaves you open to distraction or, worse, manipulation by others. Having a strong sense of who and what you are will help guide you through the toughest times in life.

CONFIDENCE

Confidence is fundamental to anything you try to accomplish. If you do not believe you are capable, you will not be able to function 100%. As a rule, stress the importance in building an environment around you that strengthen’s your sense of confidence and self-perception. Surround yourself with things that positively reinforce your abilities. Good friends, achievements, motivating atmosphere’s…Do not dwell on failures, mistakes, and other such negatives. Do not keep people around you who blatantly or subtely remind you of these things, or point out your faults. Confidence is what keeps you at the ready and always willing to leap of the block with complete faith in your abilities. When you go at it, go at it 100%.

WORK/DISCIPLINE

The importance of this virtue cannot be understated. Discipline is the art of controlling ones own natural impulses and channeling ones energy in order to achieve a desired goal or effect. Great goals and dreams do not come cheap. They don’t only demand everything of you, they demand more than what you are. They demand you grow out of yourself. Reach farther than you can, drive harder than you can, be greater than you currently are to ever reach them. Dreams are achieved through hard work and discipline. Courage gives you the strength. Integrity gives you the mindset. Discipline gives you the focus and direction. They are the glue that holds your boat together. Spend less. Control your anger. Do not eat so much. Pay attention to detail. Be more thorough. Always exercise caution. Always look sharp. Strive to gain the first step. Be great at what you do? All these things require work and discipline. Without it,  whatever you start out to do will fall apart.

RELIABILITY/TRUST

Trust is an important factor in how you interface with the world. No matter who you are, or what you can do, if people cannot rely on you and trust in you, they will not want to have anything to do with you. If you don’t have trust in yourself, you cannot accomplish anything. And lastly, you being human and capable of a limited range of things, you will eventually find yourself in the position where you need help, guidance, or something of that nature. If you cannot trust in others, you will only be able to go so far. If you say you will do something, do it. The more reliable you are, the more people will value your presence. Have trust in those willing to help you out. Allowing people to pick up the load where you cannot increases your range of effectiveness and adds the strengths and benefits of the other to your own.

KNOWLEDGE

Whatever you strive to be, be the best at it. This usually involves being the most knowledgeable one around. Well, you don’t HAVE to be the most knowledgeable one around, but it never hurts to always seek a greater knowledge about the things you do and the things around you. Learn new skills and explore new things. Build an understanding of your environment. A basic understanding of the things around you enables you to fix them when they go wrong, predict changes and plan for them, and take measures to improve them. Being knowledgeable is also a great way to be social. Can you jump start your neighbors/co-workers car? Are you able to guide someone through a complicated task, or show them how to do something new? Do you have a better way of filing your taxes for your friend? Can you assist the person who can only speak Spanish? Being knowledgeable of many things makes you a huge benefit to those around you. Anyone looking for a job knows that the more skills you have, the more valuable you become. Always seek to expand your basic understanding of things.

COMMUNICATION/TEAMWORK

In terms of becoming a functioning part of a group, this is paramount. Communication brings everyone together, not only socially, but it pools everyones thoughts, knowledge, and skills together. A sign of good communication is when someone interfaces with you when they don’t have to- such as away from work. Don’t force this, build upon it steadily. Go so far as the other person lets you, but always strive to build a better relationship with the people around you. Become willing to help them when they need help, take up the slack when they need it, and be an amplifying presence of positive reinforcement to the people around you.

In conclusion, I would say that honing these traits does not garauntee you worldy success. However, they will give you personal and spiritual success. They make you an individual capable of anything he/she puts his mind to. A person who can help and lead others when trouble comes. A person who does not run away from opposition or abandon his beliefs, but stands by them. I believe when a person develops these seven virtues, they will look upon themselves as accomplished and fulfilled people.
