Autumn's Anthem I burst to blaze in yellow gold. I wind and wail at ice blue cold. I careen and caress green here and there Making amber of the air. I fool the clever cool green trees, Strip them down, paint with ease The colors of sweet summers' death, Bright colored leaves and whitened breath I smooth the ice upon the shore, Make it thin, but ever more. I hint at ends throughout the night With shortened days of shadowed light. I bargain with the sun and moon Bid them dance to my tune. I toss the darkened clouds aside Watching cold come to abide. Across the moon I sail my shade, Playing with the shadows made, Whistling and wailing in the night Bidding adieu to Summer light. I promise things ripe and sweet. I madly dance at Winter’s feet Until I meet with Winter’s doom, And settle quietly in my tomb.
