Words
Words are very powerful things. Although words can’t hurt you physically, they have been known to kill a soul, to inflict more pain than any gun or knife ever could, yet they can also heal the deepest wound. The words of a song can move you to tears. The words of a book can fill you with hate. The words of a child can melt your heart. In this life most people long to hear those “three little words”, but those same words make some people cringe with fear. To some, words come easily and trip off of the tongue or flow onto the page, for others, words are like enemies. A person can rise to greatness because of a speech, or fall from grace because of a single thoughtless phrase. In a silent room, words can go screaming through your mind. They can chase you, they can haunt you, they can go on and on in a loop, until you think that you will explode. Words have started so many battles and have hurt more people than every war ever fought since the beginning of time. The old saying, “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me,” is perhaps the biggest lie ever told. Words can cut, slice, gouge, pierce, break and shatter a person. Bruises heal, physical pain goes away, but words live on in the mind. Even if forgiven, often times words are not forgotten. While the power of words can twist and turn somebody insideout, they can also lift them higher than the tallest building. Words can bridge a gap that seemed to stretch into infinity. Words can soothe, calm, heal, tickle, stroke and caress. If you put words down on paper, then even if you die and your entire generation dies, your words can live on. Remember the power of words the next time you want to strike out at someone. Remember a time when words affected you more than you expected. Remember the child that is reduced to tears, not by a slap on the face, but by the cruel words from someone they love. Remember, that words are very powerful things.
