Was there ever a September,
When I didn't think of you?
Paternal presence dearly missed,
Eyes of brown, or gray, or blue?
Oh, I took you so for granted!
Did I ever even see?
The man I leaned on all those years,
Always standing strong for me.
Final parting was so sudden,
Fountain of youth , so unkind.
We all buried you in winter,
Many seasons cloud my mind.
Would I turn back that wretched clock?
Find the secret to it all?
There is so much to consider,
When hot summer turns to fall.
What age would erase the torment,
Of a never ending loss?
Don't know any answer to it,
Some bridges remain uncrossed.
Are you there as in a whisper?
Your hair dark, or is it gray?
Will you lead me on my journey?
Guide your child home, on her way?
Have you left me in December,
In a world I scarcely know?
Autumn wind savaged the landscape,
Winter snow begins to blow.
There are those who detect spirits,
constant presence in my sphere.
Will I know you when I see you?
Will it be your voice I hear?
Will I find you one September?
Afraid to believe I will.
Familiar voice reasures me,
As I climb that final hill.
