Heartfelt
A Poem exploring motive and sincerity

An apology is a selfish thing born of guilt
We seek forgiveness to relieve the burden that guilt weighs on our shoulders
We turn to others and ask them to say "It's okay"
Because we selfishly want to believe that it is
But no hurt caused is "okay"
That is why we feel guilt
Because we want to unmake what we did
To unwrong the wrong-doing
Guilt is the selfless poison
It makes us human
It makes us sorry
We wish to apologise
For causing others pain, inconveniance, confusion
To have them forgive us that we may forgive ourselves
An apology is a selfish thing born of guilt
But without the guilt
It wouldn't be heartfelt
