Harry Potter brings magic into theaters once again The long awaited release of the sixth installment of the Harry Potter movie series finally arrived this summer. Originally planned to release in November, changing the release date to summer was a smart move from a financial standpoint. The movie grossed over $22.2 million at the midnight opening, the biggest midnight gross of all-time in the United States. Fans all across America lined up in front of theaters many hours before the movie started, hoping to get the best seats possible. Ever since the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, was brought to life through the magic of filmmaking, followers of the series have been criticizing whether the movie did or didn’t compare to the book. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was no different. People from all over the world shared their opinion on the movie, through newspaper reviews, angry myspace bulletins, blogs, facebook comments, and many other ways. Soon after the release, reading people’s perspectives on the newest Harry Potter film was unavoidable. The cast returned back to Hogwarts, showing their best performance yet. Protagonists Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is less irritable and cross than in the last movie, and is transiting from the young boy we remember to an adult. Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) have their share of change as well, which is conveyed through their believable and skillful acting. While it is true it certainly didn’t gross the most/least amount of profits on opening weekend, ranking second lowest out of the series, there are other aspects to consider while rating the movie. Loyal readers were right in complaining over some large flaws the movie had. The largest scene to cause (uproar/ a commotion) was the added scene of the burning of the Burrow. To most people who watched the movie, both readers and none of the books, the whole event was rather confusing. Another part that puzzled viewers was the small opening of the movie with Dumbledore and Harry. It was well filmed and was visually appealing, but some question the point of it in the movie. Smaller details, such as glimpsing the Ravenclaw horcrux, the affect of Sirius’s death on Harry, and Ron poor quidditch skills, were also left out of the movie. However, an overview the general plot and cinematography of the film, shows it to be a generally satisfying film. More than any other Potter movie before it, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” has beautiful special effects and visual appeal never reached before. Creative effects, such as Slughorn transforming from a chair to a person, is pretty “bloody brilliant” as Ron would say. The memories Harry observe throughout the plot flow effortlessly, designed in the image of drops of dye deluding in water. The evolution and perception of characters is truly outstanding. The most capturing is Tom Felton, with the movie revealing Draco’s deeper emotions and conflicts. His clash between doing what is right versus what he must do to survive is revealed through his expressive body language and dialogue. His stunning performance, along with other actors such as Alan Rickman, Bonnie Wright, and newcomers to the series, Hero Fiennes-Tiffin and Frank Dillane, is what pushes the movie from good to superb. Romance has become a bigger factor in this movie more than ever seen before. Harry begins to realize his love for Ginny, Hermione is trying to get Ron’s attention, and Ron fancies Lavender Brown (Jessie Cave) for some reason. Much of the movie focuses on the complications of dating, which is pleasant for the younger age group and loyal readers, but is somewhat dry for older generations. Luckily, the movie is filled with hilarious quotes and drama filled scenes to keep all audiences entertained. David Yates has orchestrated another masterpiece that combines talented actors, beautiful effects, and great storyline. Overall, this film may not have followed the exact storyline, but it certainly was a film worth seeing over the summer.
