Bête Noire



I see you every day. Your darkness scowls at me
through misty air with bleary eyes that just don't see.
I find you so depressing while I try to keep a happy air
about me so that others will recognize I care.

There's more to life than just the problems you bemoan.
It's not all about your worries of how to pay some loan
or that you've found another hair that's turning grey.
In truth I'm not sure how you can tell one more anyway!

Have you ever had an issue that you didn't share?
Do I really need to know and what makes you think I care?
I know the things you've done and over time they all accrue
to a point where there are times I honestly hate you.

You've been unfaithful to your wife, you've cheated and you lie
and you're unthinking actions have made other people cry.
You've put off doing things that needed to be done.
You've not been best of fathers to your daughter or your son.

I know you have your good points but it's time that I get tough.
There's no need to boost your ego, it's plenty big enough!
Before you die, you need to change, and it won't be that long
but until that day arrives, you need to right what's wrong.

There are times I wish you'd go and find another place.
I rather not be accosted every morning with your face.
I guess that's all I have to say – I can't be any clearer.
"That went well" I mutter as I turn back from the mirror.
