Quill & Ink News Issue #2 December, 2009 Encouraging News Doing Nothing Don't underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can't hear, and not bothering. Winnie the Pooh Go ahead. Do nothing. I dare ya! No, society responds, you must do something every second of the day. Work, work, work! Society is wrong, and it’s hurting you. You need breaks, you need to relax – you need to make time to do nothing. Doing nothing may feel completely at odds with what we’ve come to expect. However, our bodies and minds need to relax and take it easy. A couple of times a day, at least, we should take breaks to do nothing. If doing absolutely nothing is hard for you, try a light activity. Nothing that stresses you out – no competition. Here are a few suggestions to guide you in your quest to do nothing. I’m sure you can come up with something you want to do when you do nothing. As you do light activities, work your way up to doing nothing. You’ll be surprised at how refreshed you feel. Writing Inspiration Do nothing (or a light activity) once a day for a week. At the end of the week, sit down and write about how you feel as compared to last week. Do you feel different? Happier? More relaxed? Did you respond differently to people and events? Calmer? More polite? Did people respond to you differently? Write down anything and everything that comes to mind. Blog it, write a story, poem, essay – any form you want to express how doing nothing affects your life. You may be surprised at how different your life is when you take time to do nothing.
