Young Last Words

As the night descends,
For the journey, I prepare
Into the wilderness
Where death hides in his lair.

“So young”, they say;
“So soon”, they say,
“Why does merciless God
Have to take him away?”

I know what lies ahead –
An end and a beginning.
For fond ones, my young heart
Cries like a child and sings –

That I would never know
About love and marriage
Or having kids, watch them grow;
Grey my hair with age.

In days to come, they would see
The young face belonging to me
And read the news of my demise,
Nod their heads, show no surprise.

I close my eyes and summarize
My short life of fifteen years
And seem to think it was nice
Gained love, o’ercame my fears.

All seems to fade, my breath stifles
And begins the journey new.
I smile to think I’m like Peter Pan,
The boy who never grew.
