Destiny Rose stared at her mother in disbelief. It was just a party. Not like she was running away to join the circus. "But Mom..." She attempted even though she knew it wouldn't work.
"Young lady," her mother had that tone in her voice, the one where it said now is not the time to test my patience.
Unsatisfied, Destiny Rose abandoned her dreams of a fun get together and the chance to make friends. She had to settle for reading in her bedroom while raging inside about the unfairness of the whole situation. Sarah, who was two whole years younger than her, got to do whatever she wanted. She dressed in revealing outfits and spent long hours at different boys houses. All without punishment. Yet, when Destiny Rose asked for something small, she was immediately denied.
Resting upon her half-made bed, she picked up a book to pass the time. Two chapters later, her attention was grabbed by the sounds of something hitting the window of her bedroom. Placing the book down, she went to investigate.
Standing on the un-mowed lawn was James Lovett. He chucked another small pebble at the window before she managed to open it.
"What are you doing?" She said, trying to not yell and draw attention from anyone else in the house.
He shouted back, "Are you coming to the party?"
"I can't." She replied with much regret. She had known James for a short while, but knew she wanted to learn more. "My mom says I can't go."
"That blows."
He had a knack for making her laugh. "Sorry," was all she could think to say.
"Are you sure you can't go? Maybe sneak out," he probed, as if to make certain just in case there had been a small possibility of a chance. But at last he surrendered. "Damn. Maybe next time then."
She nodded. "Maybe." Then watched him walk away, wishing she could jump out the window to join him. Instead, Destiny Rose retrieved her faithful orange diary and vented her frustrations there, ending with four pages about James, barely ever mentioning the party that had started the whole problem.
