Land was spotted but still far away
it would be days before they ported.
The seas had been rough
but now all was calm today.

Captain Dread peered through his scope,
shaking his head, to calm he knew.
The water was smooth, like black ice,
no waves, no sound; he was giving up hope.

Then with a shout from the crows nest,
all eyes looked to the starboard side.
Captain Dread looked out over his crew,
aye He thought, tonight no one will get rest.

The water started to toss and churn,
wave after wave hitting against the bow.
All hands on deck was the order
as something bumped hard against the stern.

The winds picked up, the skies went gray.
The waves increased, water rushing the rails.
The ship was pushed with a rough force,
Captain Dread knew he would die today.

From out of the deep, tentacles arose,
encircling the stern from left to right.
The ship was tipped, the bow above the sea.
As his crew was thrown, Captain Dread froze.

He thought the story was a pirate tale,
a monster so huge to swallow a ship,
no, it could not have been true.
Just a fable created by pirates on ale!

He laughed to himself, madness setting in,
as he watched his crew fall to their deaths.
So many trips he made on this same sea,
he thought he would have been taken by the gin!
