There once was a man named Stingy Jack Who tricked the devil into a pact Though riddled with much sin Satan wouldn’t let him in So he wandered all the earth then back. Jack tricked the devil into a tree Where apples hung tantalizingly He then covered the ground With crosses all around The old devil was stuck there you see! Jack's proposal to the him was bold. Satan agreed to refuse Jack's soul. Though riddled with sin Hell would not take him in. Heaven wanted him neither, I'm told. An orange glowing pumpkin lights his way. Jack’s doomed to wander ‘til Judgment day Sometimes he may be seen At night on Halloween An example of a life gone astray. 10 lines A man named Jack made a pact with the devil for his soul. He was a terrible person. A murderer, rapist, thief etc... When he died, God refused to allow him into heaven so he went down to Hell. However, Satan also refused his soul. He then grabbed a pumpkin, and made it into a lamp and will wander the earth until Judgement day. Of-course this is a myth, but you could see how people would want to use it in a holiday such as Halloween.
