I don't know why I remember, but I do; I have tried and tried to forget the scene, but I just am not able too. Way back when I was 12, we all were11 or 12 in the 6th grade, I developed such a crush on Jeanie Jensen that I drifted over to her house and just sort of hung out in front. I didn't quite know why, but I loved Jeanie.
When I saw her hand go up to answer a question put to the class by the teacher, Mrs. Thut, and heard her answer that was as sound as all her answers to Mrs. Thut's questions. Those regular class contributions that Jeanne made brought me to a pious admiration of her knowledge. She spent a lot of time in the library that I found made me feel a deep and long lasting admiration in her pursuit of reading.
I wonder if it was her intelligence or her beauty that attracted me so strongly. She did have beauty; her hair was done in golden curls as the heroines in children's story books. Her face was angelic, and the way she walked, so very determined to get where ever she was going, impressed me as everything about her did. My loving crush as recognized in my feelings and thinking was as real as the sun it the sky.
One day while all of we students were on our way home from school at 3:10pm, Jeanie took a bad fall. Initially my heart beat faster, my eyes welled with tears, but the strongest emotion I felt was one exasperation; my thoughts could not dismiss her tripping on the whole where the drain cover was missing. The worst of my vision was that I observed the blood that formed upon her knee; there was blood from scratches on her face; her hand was bleeding, and her dress was covered with blood. I saw her as being saintly. She did not cry. I began to run to her, but stopped as her girl friends were al around her, caring, helping, comforting, and lifting her up to accompany her home. I know that there isn't a way to forget that scene. Puppy love lives with the lambs in heaven.
