Urdu:  Koie ummeed ber naheen aati
          Koie soorat nazer naheen aati

English:=== For a man like me there is no hope
                  To find my way, I grope and grope
                                          -

Urdu:  Moat ka aek din moayyan hay 
          Neend kuin raat bher naheen aati

English:=== And all night long I weep and weep
                  It becomes so bad, I can hardly sleep
                                            -

Urdu:  Aagay aati thi haal e dil pay hansi
          Ab kisi baat per naheen aati

English:=== Oh, there was a time when I could smile
                  Now I don't do it even once in a while
                                            -

Urdu:  Jaanta houn sawaab e ta'at o zohd
          Per tabeeat idhher naheen aati

English:=== The rewards of piety I certainly know
                  But to the preacher I say - no thank you, no!
                                              -

Urdu:  Hay kuchh aisi hi baat jo chup houn
          Werna kya baat ker naheen aati

English:=== I've become so quiet, I can hardly talk
                  And when they speak, I simply gawk
                                              -

Urdu:  Kuin na cheekhoun keh yaad kertay haen
          Maeri aawaaz ger naheen aati

English:=== But then I go to the other extreme
                  And if they don't listen, I yell and scream
                                                -

Urdu:  Daagh e dil ger nazer naheen aata
          Boo bhee aey chaarager naheen aati

English:=== If my burning heart they cannot see
                  They can surely see my agony
                                                -

Urdu:  Hum wahaan haen jahaan say hum ko bhee
          Kuchh hamaari khaber naheen aati

English:=== And when my feelings I totally exhaust
                  I begin to feel I am completely lost
                                                -

Urdu:  Mertay haen aarzoo maen mernay ki
          Moat aati hay per naheen aati

English:=== And then I want to cry and cry
                  And feel so sick that I want to die
                                                -

Urdu:  Ka'abay kis munh say jaao gay GHALIB
          Sharm tum ko mager naheen aati

English:=== And what should I do when I'm feeling low
                  To Mecca, says GHALIB, I ought to go
