                                Ghalib Urdu 88


Urdu:  Dil e naadaan tujhay hua kya hay
          Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hay

English:=== O my foolish heart, what's wrong with you?
                  Why are you always feeling so blue?
                                          -

Urdu:  Hum haen mushtaaq aur wo baizaar
          Ya Ilaahi yeh maagra kya hay

English:=== Oh, I'm so eager and she's so cold
                  But that's her nature I have been told
                                            -

Urdu:  Maen bhee munh maen zabaan rakhta houn
          Kaash poocho keh muda'a kya hay

English:=== I'm not mute: I do have a tongue
                  Why doesn't she ask me why am I hung?
                                            -

Urdu:  Jab keh tujh bin naheen koie maujood 
          Phir yeh hungaama aey Khuda kya hay

English:=== Oh, in Your being I don't have a doubt
                  But tell me, O God, what's it all about?
                                            -

Urdu:  Yeh parichehra loag kaisay haen
          Ghamza o ishwa o ada kya hay

English:=== Why do we have these beautiful girls?
                  And what are the brows and the raven curls?
                                            -

Urdu:  Shikan e zulf e umbereen kuin hay
          Nigeh e chashm e surmasa kya hay

English:  And why do they have such charming eyes?
              And why do they enchant and mesmerize?
                                              -

Urdu:  Sabza o gul kahaan say aa'ay haen
          Abr kya cheese hay, hawa kya hay

English:=== And what're the clouds, and what's the breeze?
                  And why are there flowers, bushes, and trees?
                                              -

Urdu:  Hum ko un say wafa ki hay ummeed
          Jo naheen jaantay wafa kya hay

English:=== And why do the lovers hold them so dear
                  The girls who're faithless and insincere?
                                                -

Urdu:  Haan bhala ker tera bhala ho ga
          Aur durwaish ki sada kya hay

English:=== For my beautiful girl I yearn and crave
                  Though I'm a beggar and a lowly slave
                                                -

Urdu:  Jaan tum per nisaar kerta houn
          Maen naheen jaanta dua kya hay

English:=== And I'll not falter; I'll not demur
                  If she needs my life, I'll give it for her
                                                -

Urdu:  Maen nay maana keh kuchh naheen GHALIB
          Muft haath aa'ay toe bura kya hay

English:=== And, GHALIB, I wonder what's wrong with me?
                  And why doesn't she take me when I'm for free?
