On my last trip to Memphis, I went to my favorite neighborhood restaurant. Owned by a branch of a family known as being one of the city's finest Italian restauranteers and at the same time serving as a well-known local "meat-and-three" southern diner,
The little two-room restaurant is in the heart of its neighborhood, situated down the street from the popular neighborhood elementary school, within sight of the local private liberal arts college, within hearing distance of the local zoo, withinn biking distance of the local art school, and until recently, a long but possible walk from my house! The restaurant features fresh vegetables, well-prepared homey specials, and its popular italian dishes. As the patrons enter the eatery, they are greeted by aromas of home-coked Italian entrees and sights of the featured daily specials with fresh vegies, meats and fragrant homemade rolls and cornbread. Thick slices of succulent garlic toast adorn each Italian platter. Huge hand-painted murals adorn the side walls of the main room; one is of a hand-painted Italian flag, and the other is of a movie poster with an Italian theme. The presence of those murals gives the restaurant an old-world, or at least old-timey feeling. Because the place is a popular hangout for residents and students, lively conversations fill the air as old friends join together for meals and meetings, dinners and dates. Scents of fresh cooking, garlic and old building combine to create a welcoming ambience to all who enter, regular or newbie! Like the famous bar in "Cheers," everybody knows your name! The age of the building has caused the floors to sag to a visibly precarious tilt; care must be exercised to avoid those areas, or at least treat them with care!
Hot coffee is always available--so hot that it is dangerous to touch the cups when the coffee is first poured! I think heaven must have a special restaurant just like warm, friendly Dino's!
