In the beginning of fairy time, when the waters were deep, the Fairy King, who had tremendous wings like a butterfly, began mixing the waters while He spoke:

Fairy Land, Fairy Land, Come alive this day
Darkness be gone, My voice obey.
With green on the ground, and blue in the sky
Let the birds and beasts come in great supply.
But now let the best of my creation be,
All manner of winged creatures, Come fairy.

It was a magnificent sight!  The waters began to churn and then from them came two white cocoons, small and tightly connected, floating in air.  They hovered and then rested on the ground near the King. Immediately He took them in an embrace and His light became theirs. The sound of thousands of giggles could be heard throughout the forest, as two tiny creatures with wings emerged. They were the exact image of the King.  As they caught sight of the King,  their wings crackled open and they flew for the first time.

This is where our story begins and unfortunately almost comes to an end, as all of Fairy Land; every creature focused its attention on the new fairies.  No one noticed the black beast moving in the shadows, no one except the King.

My Fairy King, He sees all things.
Justice and Peace are what He brings.
He does no wrong, right shall prevail
His promise stands, though fairies fail.

A celebration of life ensued as the King walked among his creation taking delight in all He had made.  Twig, the boy fairy, with thick black hair and emerald green wings, flew with his new girl companion Trinket, whose wings were like glass. Their new home was filled with the fragrance of Forget me Nots, Foxgloves, honey and saffron.

The King came every day and they enjoyed the privilege of a His close friendship.

“This garden is your home and all that is in it, however do not enter the West side!  No good will come of it. Do not go there or take anything from this place or you will surely die." This was the only warning the King left with them as He took his absence. “My children… trust me.”

One day as Trinket was gathering food, she heard a rustling in the West side trees.  She loved the forest and especially the animals.  “Maybe it's a fawn?”she thought. “I can have a peek without entering the forbidden area.”  But as you and I know reader, one should never tempt forbidden places.

As she flew near, the beast who had been biding his time poked his head out from the thicket.  He was a beautiful creature with wings of shiny gold and black.  His speech was clear and sweet.

“Trinket, my dear…”he called as he flew near.

“Oh!”  Trinket snapped as she whirled through the air.  “Father didn’t tell us about you. Who are you and how do you know my name?”

“There is much the King has kept from you. Don’t be afraid,” the beast hushed her as he helped her to her feet.  “For instance have you tried the fruit on this side of the forest?”

“No, Father was certain about that.  We are to stay away from there,” Trinket replied. “Let me get my companion Twig and I will return. You can breakfast with us on the East."

“Don’t go Trinket.  Let us gather food here," the beast snarled becoming more agitated. “Did the King really say you are not to eat from the West?  You must have misunderstood Him.  The best fruit is here.  He knows if you eat of it you will become wise like Him. He wants to save it all for Himself.”

Trinket was hypnotized as she watched the beast hand her a piece of the most succulent fruit she had ever seen.  “Father…greedy?" she thought sadly to herself and at that moment a feeling passed through her she had never felt, a need and desire she had never known.  She became angry, “Why would He keep us from this pleasure?  He did say all He had was ours,” and she grabbed the fruit and flew quickly with the beast to Twig, and they gobbled up the fruit within moments.

Upon the last bite, their beautiful fairy glow vanished and an awful thing happened!  Trinket’s wings that glistened in the sun, shriveled up like rotten bark while Twig’s fat butterfly wings that allowed him to soar like an eagle, completely disappeared and their entire bodies turned ashen gray.

“We’re dying!" Trinket gasped as they both ran and hid in the trees.

At that very moment the Fairy King came flying in the cool of the day looking for his children.  “Children? Fly out to me?” he called.

“We can longer fly to you Father,” Twig called crying.

“Have you been to the West where I commanded you not to go?“

“Trinket tempted me and offered me the forbidden fruit," Twig said in defense.

“I was tricked!” Trinket snapped.

“It is no longer safe here now that you understand evil, so we must leave the garden. As for you beast…” the King spoke as he grabbed the black fairy beast by the wings tearing them apart. “You will no longer fly but roam aimlessly without direction!”

You wings have been lost, emotions been tossed
This choice you’ve made will exact a high cost.
As your King, I’ll bring your exemption,
Through my sacrifice I’ll buy your redemption.

Shadowing his children he did something quite strange, and an odd transfer took place that day.  As they began to walk away, backs to the garden, you could see in the setting sun that the wings that once graced the back of the Fairy King were now gone, and instead rested on the backs of his beloved children.

Understand this is not the end,
But instead a door.
To the very beginning,
Of Fairy Lore!
