This Vast City
Poem of utter despair

This vast city has lost its vision.
The very light that gave it sight.
Wearing down the weary one by miserable one,
reaching out with tired arms to ensnare the ambitious.
This vast, once mighty city.
Feeding itself on the hopes and dreams of the weak and many.
Flooding its streets with the tears of those whose faith has been lost,
straining to keep afloat among the harbors and the hungry.
This terrible, terrible city.
Feeding its young on the souls of the frail and old.
The unsounded fury as manners are lost and nature takes over,
leaving the living to look after the dead.
This lost and alone city.
Helpless to stop itself yet striving to keep on.
Lining its corners with dream filled caskets,
burying the cancer that threatens to spread.
This crumbling and decaying city.
Falling under the weight of its own hopelessness.
