Supporting Character Two Character Sketch

Bridget Sullivan

Born:  1866

Died:  1948

Arrived NYC from Ireland on May 24th, 1886 on the S.S.Republic and worked her way to the Boston area.

Began working for the Borden’s in 1890.  Her duties entailed laundry and cooking, cleaning the kitchen and light housework.  Everyone took care of their own room and a char woman came in for heavy work.

She is minimally educated, but can read and do figures.  She is @ 5’5”, a bit taller than Lizzie—but with wavy dirty-blond hair and gray-green eyes, she speaks with a heavy Irish brogue.

She is neither as plodding as Lizzie, nor as calculating as Emma.  The truth is, she likes Lizzie and has an uncomfortable feeling about Emma.  But Mr. & Mrs. Borden are her employers.  They are kind to her—as kind as any employers of the time were to Irish immigrants—where signs might be put in windows saying ‘Irish or Portuguese need not apply’.

She does her work, with a minimum of grumbling.  She had hoped to find love in the New World—but when none appeared on the ship or in NYC, she moved on the where she had a few friends—Boston—and then ended up in Fall River.
