Political setting;
The kingdom of Galomera is ruled by the forty-year-old King Peregrin. The kingdom is at war with it’s neighbour, the Balderan Alliance. The King is raising taxes to build an Amarda to invade and potentially take over the port of Huelva, from where the Balderan raiding parties are being launched. In the Duchy of Monteray, The Knight Sherriff is Lord Brannah, who is ably assisted by his esquire, Gerald of Landover. Between this Duchy and the lands of the Balderan Alliance, is the Duchy of Tream, where the largest land owner (after the Duke) is the Marquis of Falcon Peak. Although the Marquis is wealthy, he has no real standing at court, being a minor royal. His wife the Marquessa has plans to alter that.
Almost a third of the Duchy of Monteray, is covered by a huge ancient forest traditionally the hunting preserve of the Kings of Galomera. The forest if guarded by rangers, recognised by their green uniforms and their blue felt caps. It is rumoured to take 20 days to travel all around the circumference of the forest. Deep inside its hidden glades live a community of elves, who patrol the woods disguised as rangers and keep the curious out.
At court there is the continuous tussle for dominance, but the King is accepted as master of all. He married late in life and has no son, only a young daughter. Nobles with eligible sons are continually parading their children, to try and catch the King’s eye as a potential son-in-law.
Lord Brannah is having to deal with increasing amounts of unrest, from bandits raiding farms and businesses, to citizens rebelling in some of the towns. It is keeping him increasing busy, too busy to parole the forests and the byways. This is how the illegal logging is allowed to take place.
