“The Girl I Saw”
By: Joseph Michael Webb
October 29, 2009

I saw you just yesterday eve, sitting and staring intently.
You were on a swing at Oakview Elementary School
Not two miles from our childhood house in Simpsonville.
You were singing some song that I can’t define with certainty.

Your auburn hair curled down the sides of your neck
Onto your shoulders like a perfectly cut diamond.
You were wearing that old powder-puff football t-shirt
That you won from the fields at Mauldin High School

Your voice was a melody to the cheerfulness inside me
Spreading a wide smile upon my face as I looked upon yours.
You were so genuinely happy; so enthused with life’s dream.
You walked amongst the butterfly garden, gently touching flowers.

Your figure disappeared before my eyes; away from the play set
And away from the school’s gardens that line the building.
All that was left was the deepest misery within my lingering soul,
And the swing that continued to sway in the evening’s gentle breeze

Death does not compare to my memories of you, my sister
For wherever I go there will be a memory of my fiercely passionate one;
The girl who was never afraid to jump toward the sky
And never afraid to save another lost soul in this world.
