![]() The decision to have a party instead of taking the children out to trick or treat was turning out to be a good idea. Not just because it was a raw rainy night outside but because it seemed to Jen it was much safer. The treats here were all of her choosing and the kids were warm and safe indoors. The holiday decorations looked great. The party store had everything they wanted. Not too scary for the first and second graders who would be the guests. At the appointed time the guests arrived wearing costumes under their rain coats. Jen played games and served the food. There was one little kid she couldn’t place. She was sure he wasn’t on the guest list but no matter, he was having fun and behaving himself. She noticed he wasn’t eating but children this age can be picky. He joined in the games and even laughed a couple of times. So, Jen thought, if we have a little party crasher he is welcome. It was only after the parents came and took their children home that she noticed the strange little boy was still here and asked him if his parents were coming. He said no. Jen started to feel a little uncomfortable, wondering what to do with him. He just smiled when she asked him where he lived. She thought, I can’t put a six year old out in the rain with nobody to see him safely home. He said, “I had a lot of fun. Thank you for letting me come to your party.” He held out his right hand. When Jen took hold of it she shivered. His hand was as cold as ice. He smiled up at her and then he vanished. 298 words
