Homeless

         HOMELESS

They walked into the mission that night,
The man, the woman and the little girl.
a sleeping baby boy in the  man’s arms.

There are so many like them nowadays.
Good people who never deserved
this to happen to them.

We could feed them, we could give them cots
safe out of the wind and weather for the night.
It’s a bad world sometimes.

The volunteer lady serves their stew
with bread and coffee. Milk for the little girl.
The volunteers mean well, I know,

but this one said a thoughtless thing  She said
to the little girl “How sad you have no home.”
The child looked up and smiled

“Yes, we do. We have a home,” she said,
“It’s just that we don’t have  a house
To keep it in right now.”
