For several days Zoya’s lifeless body lied still on the white, marble surface, inside some cave like chamber.

Suddenly, she opened her eyes widely. For a long moment she just lied there staring at the ceiling.

‘Where am I?’ was the first thought that came to her mind. She tried to remember something, anything. She did not know who she was, where she was or worst of all, what she was.

‘Dead; I’m almost certain that I should be dead.’ A thought popped in her head.

Strange feeling came over her. Feeling that would give her goosebumps all over but strangely, there were none.

Her fingers were interlaced across her belly, and she could feel that there was something tucked in under her palms. Her attempts to lift up her head were not successful. It took all of her strength to lift her arms up and see the object in her hands. It was a single crimson, long stem rose.

Then, she realized that she was naked. She should feel cold but she was not. It must have been dark in there, but she could see. She should be scared, but she was not.

Suddenly, as if some invisible restrains were removed, she was able to move. She quickly stood up.

‘I’m in some kind of a cave.’ She thought again.

Somewhere in the distance she could hear water dripping slowly and steadily.

Then, she heard something else, a whisper. At first she thought that it may be a wind coming in from somewhere. But then, she heard it again. The whisper became louder. Then suddenly, it was behind her. She quickly turned her head in the direction of a sound. A whisper disappeared into the distance and come back again. This time it came from different direction.

“Is someone there?” she yelled but there was no answer.

“Are you calling me?” she yelled again, and again no answer.

“Is that my name?” she tried again, and yet again no answer.

“Who are you?” she demanded, starting to lose her patience.

Then the whisper suddenly stopped.

‘That must be my name, Meeha.’ She thought about it for a moment. “I think I like it.” She said shrugging her shoulders.

‘Let see what else is here.’ She thought and stared to explore the cavern that was her home all this time.

Nearby she found the source of the dripping sound. Water was dripping from a long stalactite and pooling into round pool on the cave’s floor. The pool was no bigger than a puddle but the sight of water made her uneasy.

Few paces away from the pool she found three sheep.

‘Are they lost?’ she thought. ‘They couldn’t be. Someone made sure that they have food.’ There was lots of hay under their hoofs.

She felt incredible thirst. She could hear their hearts beating; smell their blood moving inside their veins. Her craving for blood was overpowering.  She leaped in the air and landed among sheep. They scurried away, frightened. Her attempts to catch one were quiet clumsy at first. But her movements were getting faster, her reflexes adjusted. Finally, she caught one. Like a predator, she jabbed her teeth in the animal’s neck. At first sheep kicked, trying to free herself. Soon, kicking stopped; the sheep gave in, relaxing her body. And then Meeha realized that she is draining the animal of her blood, although she can feel sheep’s heart still beating.

If she lets this animal live, she will recover, and her body will produce more blood. Blood that will sustain her, for a while anyway. She soon realized that it is hard to stop from doing so. But her survival instinct was telling her that she must stop.

She wandered if she is some kind of werewolf. But whatever she may be, she liked it.

For days she wondered around that cave, feeding on the sheep. The whole time she could feel as if she was being watched. She decided not to pay too much attention to that.  But she could also sense that sheep were running out of blood and hay; not recovering from their blood loss. She needed to find her way out of that place.

Just when she thought she was going insane, she felt a breath of fresh air. It was very faint at first and if her senses were not heightened she would have missed it. As she followed it the fresh air became stronger and stronger. Suddenly, the entrance to the cave appeared. She was free at last. It was the night time outside. The forest that surrounded the cave was bustling with the sounds of nocturnal animals. She could hear them, see them, and feel them. A small pack of wolfs draw her attention. As she was approaching them, she made too much noise for their liking. Startled, they ran off. Meeha decided to follow them. She discovered that she can move with an incredible speed and agility. They changed directions quickly and she eventually lost them. The incredible euphoric rush of absolute and total freedom overcame her. She felt invincible. When she reached the top of the rock she was climbing on, she roared and screamed in the dark night.

Levant was feeding on the large deer. Animal just gave in and finally ceased it’s kicking and struggling. Then he heard her. This was his territory and he did not want any intruders. Reluctantly, he let the deer go. The animal quickly stumbled onto its legs and ran off into the forest.

It did not take him long to find her. She was not aware of his presence so he decided to observe her for a while. It was obvious to him that she was a brand new vampire.

‘She is magnificent!’ he thought.

When her euphoric roaring and screaming finally quiet down, she was still panting out of breath. He decided to show himself to her.

“You are attracting way too much attention to yourself.” He said calmly.

She quickly turned her head in the direction of his voice. She saw a man wearing nothing but a pair of dirty, torn sailor’s pants. His head was bald. Only his goatee revealed that his hair may be dark blond. His eyes were the biggest green eyes she saw. His smooth, chiseled, lean chest was once sun kissed but now his entire complexion was pale. He was tall too.

She realized that she is still nude. Strangely, that did not bother her.

“Who are you?” she demanded.

“My name is Levant, and you are on my territory.” He answered.

Awkward silence followed. She did not know what to say next.

“Do you know who you are?” he asked her.

“No.” her answer was simple.

“Wasn’t your maker present at your awakening?” he asked again.

“There was no one. I woke up in some cave. It took me very long time to find my way out of there.” She answered.

“Aha! Your maker must be an ancient vampire. A dying breed.” He told her.

“A vampire?!? Is that what I am?” the question was directed more to herself than it was to him. She had a worried expression on her face as her eyes grew wider.

Levant just smiled. Under different circumstances, a vampire such is her, would be totally out of his league. But she was brand new, inexperienced. ‘This should be easy.’ He thought.

“Are you one too?” she asked him.

“Yup! I’ve been one for almost seventy years.” Was his answer.

“We are immortal, then?” she asked.

“Do not kid yourself. Vampires are not immortal. You and I are just lucky.” He said.

“Lucky! How’s so?” she asked again.

“So many questions! You obviously need someone to teach you a way of the vampire.” He replied

“And I suppose that someone would be you.” She said with a smile on her face.

“Do you see anyone else around?” he asked.

She looked at him and thought to herself ‘He’ll do.’

“So teach me then!” she answered.

But Levant had different game in his mind. He decided to test her. Meeha stared to have visions in her head. Visions of her and Levant, their bodies joined in the union. She heard him growling at her, but not because he wanted to frighten her, he wanted to engage her. And to her surprise she stepped closer to him and answered his growls by growling back at him. Although there was no actual physical contact between them, they were engaged in physical way telepathically. Levant sensed that although she is willing, she is also very reluctant. ‘She must’ve been a virgin in her life.’ He thought ‘More persuasion is needed.’ And he broke the contact.

Once they animal like sounds quiet down, Meeha stepped back from Levant and wandered what have just happened.

But Levant felt differently, he was pleased with her. The pleasure she can and will offer to him some day is beyond this world.

“That was a lesson number one.” He said to her. “As for the next thing, we have to find you some clothes. However, the dawn is breaking and sun will soon be up. Can you find your way back to that cave?” he added.

“I don’t think so. Anyway, I don’t wish to go back there.” She answered.

“Very well. You can come with me, if you wish.” He took her by her hand and led her to his lair. It was a large, deep rock shelter settled at the base of a bluff. Inside he had a simple large, flat rock for a bed.

“It’s not much but I’m rarely here.” He said. “And the sun doesn’t shine in here.”

“I’m not afraid of sun.” Meeha said.

‘No she wouldn’t be.’ Levant thought ‘She is a near perfection.’

“Then you are luckier than others.” He said, trying to look for something.

“Why?” she stared with her questions again.

“As I said before, vampires are not immortal. First of all, there is no way of knowing if the process of transitioning will take place at all. You may be just plain dead. If the process had taken and you awake a vampire, you can age extremely fast and perish in a matter of few hours.” He paused to look at her making sure she was paying attention.

“And we age too. Only very slowly that it only seems as if we are immortal. The fact that you are still here tells you just how lucky you are. And then there is a matter of sun. Normally, a vampire is afraid of sun but you are not, that means you can freely move during the day. Who ever made you was striving for perfection. Now, you just need to add centuries of experience.” His voice sounded disappointed. He knew she will come to realization that she is above and beyond him. Hopefully that day will not come too soon. He pulled out a black, silk, sleeveless dress from somewhere and threw it at her.

“Here, you can wear this, hope it fits!” Then he lied on his cold bed of rock and with his hand gesture offered her to join him. She put the dress on, it was bit loose on her but it fit her, then she laid down next to him.

“Are you comfortable?” he asked thinking that she may still need that human comfort.

“As comfortable as I can get.” She answered. “Where did you get this dress?” she asked.

“I don’t know, someone left it behind. Let’s rest now. We’ll get out by the next nightfall again.”

And they both fell into deep, motionless sleep. Their bodies looked like two marble statues frozen in place and time.

It took Meeha almost two full days to wake up again. She did not rest since her original awakening. Levant was out hunting once. He fed well; he knew she will be thirsty once she wakes up. Upon his return, he found her awake.

“Did you have a good rest, my, you were out for the full two days.” He said.

Meeha did not answer, she felt weak. Levant noticed that she needs nourishment. He bit his own wrist allowing the smell of blood fill the lair. Meeha just took the scent in.

“Here, drink!” he commanded.

She took his hand in hers and raised it to her mouth. Then she drank and drank.

“Hey, leave some for me!” she heard Levant. He had a smile on his face.

“Oh! I’m sorry!” she said and wiped her mouth.

“Just kidding! I fed extra knowing that you may want some. Did you have enough?” he asked.

“I think so. But, I much rather catch my own food, though.” She answered.

‘Independent! I see.’ Levant thought.

“And you will starting tonight.” He replied. “Do you have a name?” he continued.

“I’m not sure but while I was trapped in the cave I could hear as if someone is whispering “Meeha”. I just assumed that Meeha was my name.” She answered.

“Then, Meeha it is. Levant is my vampire name; I don’t remember my human name either.” He replied. “It also means westerly wind that blows through the Strait of Gibraltar and brings clouds and rain. Yeah, my maker had a strange sense of humour?”

She just looked at him smiling. Her face was both angelic and devilish.

He tried to engage her again. This time she was a lot more responsive to his suggestions.

She could feel Levant stroking her back gently but when she looked at him he was not touching her at all. She closed her eyes and arched her back in the enjoyment.

“How you doing this?” she whispered.

“Shhhh….no more questions.” He whispered back.

Levant’s gentle strokes forced her to lie down on the hard bed of rock. Normally lying on the hard rock would not be that pleasant but now hardness of the rock did not bother her. Then a different vision popped up in her mind. He was on top of her kissing her neck and shoulders. This scene was somehow familiar to her. Disturbed, she quickly opened her eyes and jumped up.

“I…I don’t think we should continue!” she said to him.

“Are you remembering something?” he asked.

“I’m not sure! But I don’t want to go on. Not now anyway.” She answered.

“All right!” was all Levant could say. ‘But soon I hope.’ He thought.

He decided to teach her hunting instead. He could use another feed since she drank almost everything. Of course he lied when he told her she can drink as much as she needs.

He spotted a deer in the bushes. Slowly, he approached and then leapt in for a kill. However, he let it go.

“Your turn!” he told her.

Meeha looked at him and ripped the seams of her dress. She could not run after the dear in the long dress. Then, she took off after the deer. Levant followed her. He found out just how fast and agile she was. Even he had a hard time keeping up with her. They ran through the forest, avoiding the trees and rocks. Mountain terrain was steep and at places treacherous. But that was not going to stop her. Levant eventually could not keep up and he lost her. When he finally caught up with her, she was already feeding on the deer. He just kept looking at her

“Don’t kill the animal, it can provide more for us at later time.” He said.

“I left some for you.” She told him when she was finished.

“That’s so nice of you.” He replied cynically. He fed briefly and let the deer go.

Meeha stared to walk back to his lair. This time she remembered the way. Levant followed.

“How come you feed only on animals? Don’t you like humans' blood?” she asked him.

Levant did not answer right away. Meeha looked at him; he appeared as if he is thinking of the answer to tell her.

“There is nothing in this world that I wouldn’t do or give to be able to feed on humans. But this was my maker’s strange sense of humor. You see, this is my curse, my cross to bear. I can’t feed on humans no matter how badly I want to. That is why I don’t venture where humans reside. I stay here, in the mountains.”

Meeha stopped. She looked at him for a long moment. ‘That is a mean curse.’ She thought.

“What would happen to you if you try?” she asked him.

“I would most likely perish in smoke and flames.” He answered.

“Doesn’t it get lonely here?” she asked again.

“I have strong telepathic abilities. I can connect with any vampire anywhere in the world, whenever I feel like.” He replied.

Levant wanted to change the subject. He commented how she ruined her dress. But she was sure that she can run faster after her pray without silly petticoats and dresses. He chuckled in agreement.

Both of them could feel that sun is about to rise. They were close to his lair and by the time they were slipping inside first rays of sun already reached the forest.

As they were falling in their lifeless sleep Meeha asked him about his curse.

“Why would your maker do this to you?”

“I wasn’t the nicest man alive so he decided to punish me for all of my existence.” He explained.

“How bad really wore you?” she asked again.

“I’ll tell you one day, maybe.” He answered half asleep.

Meeha woke up from her vampire sleep. She looked at Levant. He was still like a marble statue. His handsome face looked so innocent in his deep sleep. But she knew that he is far from innocent, and she may be playing with fire. She sat up and glanced over his body. Through his thin pants she could see his raging desire. As he was waking up he moaned and whispered someone’s name.

‘Another one of his long distance, telepathic, sensual encounters.’ Meeha thought. There have been many all the time.

“Male or female this time?” she asked him when he awake.

“It was a female vampire, quiet good too.” He answered as a matter of fact.

He sensed that she was somehow bothered by this. In his experience, female vampires can be insanely jealous.

“You are not jealous, are you? Because, I can do this again.” He said. He was hoping that she would be in the mood.

She answered his question with her silence and piercing gaze.

“Come on, just open your mind up and let me guide you.” He continued.

He took her head in his hands and pressed his forehead against hers. Then, the visions stared in her head. He was kissing the side of her neck and shoulder. Gently nibbled on her earlobe, and then ran his tongue down her torso and in between her breasts. Meeha felt incredible rush of lust racing through her body. She tried to respond back to him by creating her own visions, but his visions were coming on faster and stronger. So much was going on in her head that she could not keep up and the connection was broken.

“That was good, you’ll get a hang of this soon, you’ll see.” Said Levant.

“Oh, I don’t know. I don’t think I ever experienced this when I was human.” She replied.

“I think you must’ve had some kind of experience, the wrong kind, you seem to be jumpy.” He added.

“Maybe I should experience this the "real way" first?” she asked him.

“Hm, I haven’t done this the human way in decades; don’t know if I’d be any good.” He answered. “But I’m up for a challenge.” He quickly added. ‘Any which way as long as I can have you.’ He thought to himself.

But he quickly changed the subject.

“I’ll be leaving soon, heading north. I have to follow the migration of animals. Will you be joining me?” he asked her hoping that she will accept.

“I’ll go with you.” She answered and a big smile appeared on his face.

For the next two years they stayed together. Whenever they came close to human dwellings Meeha ventured among people while Levant preferred to stay behind. She stole her first clothes from the clothes line. It was a one piece sleeveless black dress with small, metal hooks on the bodice. She also grabbed a white shirt with wide sleeves that was worn underneath the dress. This was not typical dress of the folks from her village. They were someplace further south, towards the Adriatic Sea. After all, Levant is a sailor and sailors do not venture too far from the sea.

She liked it being around people. It was unbelievably easy to get them to do what she wanted. Especially men, they were most eager to part with their earthly possessions just to talk to her or to be with her. Neither she nor Levant had any use of things they gave her. They have not planned to carry anything with them. It slowed down their movement.

Levant did not cease his attempts to engage her in his telepathic sensual encounters. With every of their sessions they managed to get a bit further. However, each time the connection was broken abruptly. Levant started to change his tactics and found out that Meeha was more open to “human ways” of love making. This, however, brought whole new perspective for him. He started to get new flashes of memory. At first he did not know if he was remembering something or if it was just another telepathic vision. But it felt more like a memory than a vision. He saw his life of a young sailor and his shipmate who had a young daughter. She was just a little girl but he already knew that he loved her. While she was a child, she saw him as someone who carried her around on his shoulders, and teased her by pulling her hair. Whenever the ship was docked  her father and him would come home for a meal. She was always his little girl and she was blossoming just for him.  He did not get to see her often, she blossomed slowly into a shy and quiet girl. They started to meet secretly and she returned his love. Once she was blossomed she caught the captain’s eye and her father promised her to him. Of course he would want to marry his daughter to ship’s captain, instead of rum drinking, gambling, skirt chasing sailor. She was scared of captain; strange stories were told about him. Levant and her ran away to get married. The night caught them on their way and they had to find lodging in the abandoned house near the highway. They spent one magical night together in each others embrace. His sailor's coat spread on the filthy house floor. Early next morning they were found. Levant was sent to a prison to be hung. When the morning arrived his body was found lifeless on the prison floor. Captain claimed his body for sailor’s burial. After few days Levant woke up a vampire in ship’s infirmary.

He could not remember anything.

One night while they were walking on the path heading north, Meeha reminded Levant of his promise to tell her just how bad person he really was while he was alive.

“I was a sailor and rum was my first love. Gambling was second and close third were women. I’ve been in many fist fights, lost very shirt off my back gambling. Then I’d win it all back and then some, and lost it again. I didn’t hesitate to hit woman if she wasn’t willing. I raped a girl or two and I killed a man. I never killed anyone or anything as a ravenous vampire but as a human…I didn’t seem to bother me. Humans can be quiet ruthless, especially to another fellow human. Pathetic! It wasn’t until I ran into my maker, a ship captain, that I met my match. Changing me into a vampire was an experiment of some kind for him. He was convinced that I’ll change my ways. He couldn’t be more right. Well, that’s my story.” He said his eyes glancing towards his feet hoping that she will not detect that he is hiding something. He chose to keep his newly found memory to himself. Some things were meant to be kept and left alone.

“How come your memories are intact?” she asked him.

“They weren’t always. As you, I couldn’t remember anything at first. It took me decades to piece together this much.” He answered.

Suddenly, Meeha stopped. She was familiar with this landscape. Dense forests broken up by cultivated fields. She started to lead the way, picking up her pace, totally unaware of it. Levant followed without saying anything. He knew she was getting some of her memories back. Just before the dawn they reached the small village. Meeha stopped suddenly, gazing at the small, simple house. A thin line of smoke was climbing out of its chimney. Fire on the hearth most likely went out recently. Levant stopped too, walked back to Meeha and turned his head in the direction of her gaze. She walked over to the house. Levant stood where she left him. Then he saw her opening the door and walking in.

When she returned after few minutes she just made a gesture with her head to continue.

“Do you know this house?” he asked her.

“I feel like I should.” She answered.

Meeha stopped and turned around to look at him.

“I think I want to find more about this. I’ll have to stay until I do.” She said.

“I guess one more day won’t hurt us.” He replied.

“It may take more than a day!” she said again.

“We’ll stay.” He replied calmly. If it was not for her, he would not discovered his new memories, this was at least he could do for her.

“Where can we stay?” he asked.

“I think I know just a place.” And she led him to the barn that was devoid of any animals, except of mice.

“How did you know this would be here?” he asked.

“I just remembered it.” And she opened her eyes widely looking at Levant.

“My first memory came back!” she was excited.

“That’s great!” Levant replied. He hoped that she would not get too excited, he had a feeling she may get disappointed.

Meeha visited that house for few nights. She found a man living in there alone. He was drunk and passed out every night. House was neglected and filthy. She looked around the single room of the house. There were two, no three beds. One was small child size mattress on the floor, tucked in the corner behind the bigger bed meant for a single person. She kept looking at that bed. Then a man would wake up startled as if from a nightmare, and she would quickly disappear.

This night she kept staring at that bed and then she saw a young girl that looked just like her on the bed. The girl was pretending to be a sleep. The man residing in this house was standing at the foot of the bed and slowly started to creep up on top of the girl. Meeha wanted to scream but she managed to kill the scream that was building up in her throat. She knew what was coming next. That girl in the bed, that was her, and that man, that was her father!  She just remembered her last night as a human.

At that moment the man, her father, woke up startled again. She decided to show herself to him.

When he tilled the bottle he was clutching in his hands, to finish it off, she quickly stood behind the chair he was sleeping on. Even a vampire could smell his alcohol aura. He saw her and sprang onto his feet. Then he stared to call her by some strange name, "Zoya". That might have been her human name, but she is Meeha now. That Zoya died in the creek, all alone and scared. But when he hugged her, pretending that he cares, her vampire instincts kicked in with full blast. She desired human blood. And she was going to get it all. Her father thought she was returning his hug but she was going in for a kill. When his heart stopped beating she released his lifeless body. She stood there watching him just to make sure that he is dead. Then she left that poor, little house, never to look back.

Again Levant was waiting outside and when he saw her he knew instantly.

“You killed that man, didn’t you?!” he said as she was approaching.

“That man was my father!” she answered.

Levant opened his mouth as to say something but his words did not come out.

Meeha stopped close to him, so dangerously close. Then she hurled herself to him and wrapped her arms around him. He just stood there with his arms hanging to his sides not knowing what to do. Her body was shaking. He knew that killing would do that to you, even if you are a vampire. Slowly, he wrapped his arms around her and rocked her gently from side to side.

“Take me away from here.” She said to him after a short while.

“Where can we go now? The dawn is about to break.” He replied and lifted her up in his arms. She was surprisingly heavy for such a slim frame, but he carried her effortlessly back to the barn.

“I hoped that my memories of my human life would be happy but instead I discovered this…” Meeha said when he put her down.

“It’s never happy.” Levant whispered, shaking his head.

“What should I do now?” she asked him with desperation in her voice.

“This was your village and you obviously have unfinished business with these people. You need to stay and find out.” He answered.

“What about you?” she asked again.

“Don’t worry about me! I’ll head back closer to the sea. I miss it; I was a sailor after all.” He answered.

He could feel that she was changing. She tasted the human blood and she made her first kill. Soon, she will want more of it. Animals’ blood could no longer sustain her.

They woke up by the next sundown. Meeha was unhappy. She did not want to see him go. But she could not make him stay. Except if she makes love to him, the way he wants it, maybe he will stay. She growled at him in hope that she is doing it right and he will respond. Instead Levant just laughed. He walked behind her and hugged her around her waist. Then he stared to place sensual kisses on her neck.

“Let’s do this your way.” He whispered.

He quickly and skillfully undressed her and lowered her onto the pile of hay. They made love, real love for the first time. For the first time for Meeha and for Levant, first time in decades. It was dark when they finally stepped out of the barn.

“There is a creek up the road where you can cross. Water makes me uneasy, That's where I died when I ran away from my drunk father when he tried to rape me. I think you can find your way from there.” She told to Levant.

This was first time she told him the rest of the story. He did not want to ask her any questions too soon. She needed the time to process all of this.

He hugged her for the last time and quickly turned around to head out. He was walking slowly when he heard her.

“Levant!” he turned around to look at her “Will I see you again?” she asked.

“Don’t be silly!” She heard him yell back. ‘Just think of me.’ His voice appeared in her thoughts. And with that he was gone.

She stood there for a long time, hoping to see him coming back, that he changed his mind. But no one came. She would cry, if she could.

“What should I do now?” she asked him with desperation in her voice.

“. This was your village and you obviously have unfinished business with these people.

By the next sundown  Meeha woke up unhappy. She did not want to see him go. But she could not make him stay. Except if she makes love to him, the way he liked it, maybe he will stay. She growled at him in hope that she is doing it right and that he will respond. Instead Levant just laughed. He walked behind her and wrapped his arms her around her waist. Then he stared to place sensual kisses on her neck.

“Let’s do this your way.” He whispered.

Skillfully, he undressed her and slowly lowered her onto the pile of hay. They made love, real love for the first time ever for Meeha and for Levant, first time in decades.  It was dark, cold night when they finally stepped out of the barn.

“There is a creek up the road where you can cross. Water makes me uneasy, I slipped and cracked my head open when I was running away from my drunk father that night when he tried to rape me. I think you can find your way from there.” She told to Levant.

This was first time she told him the rest of the story. He did not want to ask her any questions too soon. She needed the time to take it all of in.

He hugged her for the last time and quickly turned around to head out. He was walking slowly when he heard her.

“Levant!” he turned around to look at her “Will I see you again?” she asked.

“Don’t be silly!" he yelled back. 'Just think of me.' his voice appeared in her thoughts.

And then he quickly disappeared in the tree line.

She stood there for a long time, hoping he will come back, that he changed his mind. But no one came.

She wanted to cry and if she could she would have.
