“Never What it Seems”
By: Joseph Michael Webb

Nothing is ever what it seems in this petulant life.
From the meandering rivers in the deep valleys
to mountaintops that scrape the atmosphere.
Life captures moments only to be partially lit.
Intentions of those around illustrate painfully
that loving, kind, supportive people are often
the finest scum to line a sewer pipe beneath us.
They lie, cheat, and steal at an escalating pace.
The sardonic one I loved was the most beautiful soul.
He was always in deep thought and carefully attentive,
that deep thought was revealed to be a malevolent sign.
I caught him in our designated bed with someone else.
Hours after he kissed my lips and said he loved me
He lay with his “new friend” that he met at work.
A scorned and powerless person am I now!
But he didn’t know until it was too late that I don’t need him.
Nothing in petulant life is ever what it seems today,
From my pseudo relationships to my belief in God…
