Sonnet to Desire

Prodigious passions emerge from Love's womb,
the unbridled children of all the world's toil,
raised to betray their only forebearers
as roses that blight the surrounding soil.
O' unerring Reason, come with great haste!
A viscious disease has striken the plain,
subverting solace with grave deprivation,
a threat to the Soul, an undying strain.
Why must Desire elude Understanding
and journey alone through the winter cold?
Must your survival thrive on these phantasms?
What hollow idols can delusions mold?
Shame on Desire! That soliloquy!
Moving the body but always naive.
