“Please say that was a dream…” Even as I said it I knew that it wasn’t a dream. For one, I could remember everything that happened the night before and I usually don’t remember anything about my dreams.

I could remember how my mum had followed me up to my room, Layla tagging along beside her.

“How could you let him come and live here?” I asked, tears streaming down my face. “He nearly ruined this family and he broke my heart. How mum, how?”

“I didn’t know it was him, believe me Bailey! I don’t like him anymore than you or Layla but he’s here now and we need the money!” She had tried to sit down on the bed beside my but I just pushed her away.

“Bailey, don’t worry, it’s going to be okay” Layla smiled slightly before giving my hand a squeeze and exiting the room. This time when mum tried to hug me I let her, if just for a second.

Mum had tried to get me to go downstairs but I refused, spending the remainder of the day on the phone to Kathy and Alex, explaining what had happened. Kathy threatened to kill Jake with a sledgehammer and to be honest I probably would have taken her up on the offer if it weren’t for the fact that a criminal record looks really bad on any kind of application and Alex, well I had never heard him so angry. In the end it was me who had to convince Alex not to kill him.

I rubbed my eyes and realised that I had fallen asleep in my clothes. Sighing, I rubbed off last nights make up off and changed into some black shorts, an orange vest top and a black hoodie with a skull and cross bones on it thrown on top.

I straightened my inky black ringlets and re-applied my make up. I looked down at my hands and saw that they were shaking. I clenched them into fists and shoved them into the pockets of my hoodie.

I braced myself and stepped outside. Once I was in the kitchen, I relaxed, he wasn’t there. I checked the clock and cursed, I was going to be late if I didn’t get a move on. I quickly chugged down a glass of orange juice and grabbed my bag.

“Come on Layla!” As soon as I said it I could hear her footsteps charging down the stairs. I handed over her bag and shoved my converse on quickly. “You ready?” She nodded.

Unfortunately, seeing as our school was less than two miles away, Layla and I had to walk to school. Most days it would set Layla off in a really bad mood and I would have to try and calm her down before school. It was mostly okay though, seeing as we called for Alex and Kathy on the way.

We’d walked about a metre before we heard a ‘Wait!” I turned around and scowled. Jake was running up to us.
“I’m going to your school now” he muttered, stepping in line with us. I ignored him and the silence began to grow uncomfortable but just then my phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Heya Bails! Look, your calling for me today?”

“Don’t I always?”

“Yeah, anyway is he with you?”

“If the he your referring to is Jake then yes he is with me but don’t even think about trying anything, okay? You promised you wouldn’t kil-” I looked over at Jake “err, hurt him” Layla snorted and I punched her side playfully.

“Fine, but I’ll tell him where to go”

“Please don’t, that’s my job”

“Fine, see you in a bit” I laughed at the sulky tone of his voice.

“Bye babe” I slammed my phone shut and saw Jake looking at me oddly, I raised my eyebrow and opened my mouth to say something but I was distracted by a familiar voice.

“Baileeeeeeeey!” I laughed and turned around to see Kathy running at me, her arms full of textbooks.

“Katheeeey!” I took half the textbooks out of her hands when she got to me. “Seriously, you should fix your bag…or get a new one, whatever. I’m getting sick of carrying your books.”

“Bailey, you walk two yards and then you do that thing with your eyes that makes Alex do whatever you want and then you just dump the books on him! Oh, Hey Layla and hey…” Layla waved and I opened my mouth to warn Kathy but I was interrupted by Jake.

“Jake” He muttered. Kathy’s eyes narrowed and she took a violent step towards him. I stepped in between her and Jake.

“You-you’re the-you-oh my god-Bailey stop making shut up movements at me!” She tried to walk around me but I stopped her.

“Stop it Kathy!” I frowned at her.

“Carry on Kathy” piped Layla. I turned to glare at her.

“Not helping!” I turned to Jake. “You think this is bad…wait until we get to Alex’s house. He kind of wanted to kill you. I’d make yourself scarce.”

“I just want to talk to you.” He said. I snorted.

“Yeah yeah, just go” He sighed

“I’m not scared of him…” he folded his arms. “Let him come”

“Still cocky I see” I murmured. Kathy started to say what he could do with his cockiness.

“You’ve changed” his voice became soft. “Fine, I’ll go…but we will talk” He began to jog ahead.

“Yeah, good riddance” Kathy yelled, waving her arms in the air, dropping half her books in the process. I looked at her and sighed, I just wanted to get on with my life.
