Lost in the short stories on my laptop, sighs and laughs-out-loud attracted glances over the cubicles  Buzz lurked undetected behind me. She read over my shoulder as I typed: Each story a brush stroke, collectively paints a postcard village of rural values; a sense of community and concern for one another.

“So you went ahead without approval?” said Buzz. “Cool.”

I jumped out of my seat.

“The way you say that,” I said, “sounds as if you won an office pool. It's not what you think.”

“Neither is the pool,” she said.

Without asking, she rephrased my pitch to read: 'A literary snapshot capturing the collective thought of writers, in one town, at the exact same moment in time.'

She offered to help in the reading. She pushed me aside and uploaded the stories to her laptop.

“Judging, however, must stay under the radar,” she said.

She glanced at LG to make her point.
