Over the years, Chelsea United Church has offered temporary accommodation to all faiths and nationalities during difficult times. While cleaning out the cellar, a series of letters were found hidden behind a loose brick; written and sealed but never mailed. Possibly penned by (a) female Mexican migrant worker(s) in hiding, desperation resonates in every sentence.

“It Is In pardoning that we are pardoned”
    ~St.Francis of Assisi

Dear Mama:

Please find forgiveness in your heart. I pray to Saint Francis you can. I was only a burden, but you would never say so. There was no future for either Dulcinea or I in Merida. We made a pact to find husbands in Canada. I appreciate the sacrifice you made so Rosa and I could marry for love, but that is not in the cards, for me anyway. In order that your selfless concession is not wasted, I will now do the same to pass the opportunity to your future grandchildren.

Please do not worry Mama. Dulcinea and I have talked about this for years. We have a plan. She came first last year. Now I just have to find her to get started. In fact, I cannot wait to tell her I have a head start. I have already met a man. He is a gentleman.  He reminds me of Father Lopez. He may not be Catholic Mama, but he believes. He assures me working in the greenhouses is just temporary. Immigration takes time. I promise you marriage must come first. I'm not sure he is THE man, but for the moment he is part of the plan. If we do marry, I will keep father’s name. You and Rosa will be at the wedding.

Thousands of Mexicans work here from March to September. I am sure you know many. Chantico Ortega says 'Hello'. We do the work locals choose not to. Every Canadian does not have a job and still these jobs have to be filled by Mexicans. We do not understand. We are just grateful.

In Chelsea, you should see the houses. They are so big. Leamington, just down the road, was voted the best place in Canada to live.

When our plan works, I will send money for Rosa's tuition. There's lots of it here. Everywhere you turn.

If Dulcinea happens to write, can you forward it to Chelsea United Church, 103 main St. North, Chelsea Ontario, Canada, N8H 3C6. You can write too! Please include that picture of Dulcinea on my dresser. Thanks.

Mucho Amor
