The inflection in his voice told me he meant business, that he wasn’t joking around anymore, it was time to finally break out of this place. My breakout partner and I set out a plan to escape Anza Asylum by midnight. He had belied all of his “friends” in the attempt to escape, at any cost. The stage was set, it was time, 11:30pm, thirty more minutes and our time will finally come. We sat in our cells, next to each other waiting, staring at the clock. Ding! The clock went and clandestinely cut the bars on our cells and jumped the guards. All you could hear was the thump of their limp bodies hitting the floor. As we continued down the hall, we looked onward, disingenuously, as a dozen or so guards walked around the halls, each one just as stupid as the next. It looked like we were in the clear, that we had a straight shot to the door when a guard stopped us.
“What are you doing out of your cells?” asked the guardsman
“Simply using the restroom sir” Marcus dissembly replied.
“Carry on, but be back in your cells with the next five minutes.”
The guard went on his way. I thought to myself, we were almost caught, our lives, over because of one encounter but I quickly moved on and got it out of my head. Marcus was nefarious for beating up on other inmates and extorting items from them. I was lucky to be his only friend. I wondered what life was going to be like for the others once they caught wind of what we had done. Stop getting ahead of yourself, focus, I thought to myself.
Marcus was sent the Anza because he had been very perfidious when he was in the military and was never caught until one of his buddies ratted him out. Marcus says he swore revenge on him, I think he’ll do it. All I know is that when we get out, that guy is going to get it pretty bad. All these thoughts going through my head were distracting me again and again and I couldn't let myslef get overwhelmed.
As we were walking the last stretch of the hall way all the other inmates were trying to grab at us and take them with us. They made so much noise that they almost caught the attention of the guards. We had to hurry, our window of time was slowly closing and I think some of the guards were cathcing on.
"Come Marcus, keep running." I yelled at my trailing companion.
I was the first to the door and i burst through it noticing that guards were on our heels. I yelled for Marcus one last time but I couldn't see him anymore. Then, I heard a faint clatter of running feet and I quickly turned around and finish running through the door. I have no idea how lucky i was to pass the armory on the way out the door. I stocked up: one M-16, five clips and two smoke gernades. I whipped my head around to see a half a dozen guards running towards about 150 feet away. I grasped the trigger and pulled firmly.
Blast after ear piecing blast, my weapon unloaded the deadly lead and the guards bodies limply fell to the floor. After I was sure they were all disposed of I continued on my way. All I had to do was go through one more corridor and I was free. I burst through the final door, and ran outside only to be met with a fire fight. I quickly dove behind a cement wall as bullets flew over my head and all around me. I waited for them to reload, threw a smoke gernade and unleashed the entire clip through the smokey air. I bolted one last time to the meadow and dove over the fence.
I hit the ground dropped my clips and fired the remaining shots at the facility. I was free but it was at a cost. I will never forget Marcus that big S.O.B., he will always be in my mind. As for me and my freedom, i ran as hard as I could, now I could start my new life.
