Raising Kids Alone
He spewed his loving words but left me in shame.

He came along and made my lonely heart swoon
and now my babies should be chirping by June.
I haven't seen the rotten old rooster since;
just the thought of that scoundrel makes my soul wince.

He left with just a note, a mere little scratch
and now I sit waiting for my chicks to hatch.
He said that he would return to me someday;
he had to "find himself," that's all he would say.

He told me I had the prettiest of legs,
yet, he stared at hens while I tended the eggs.
He said 'beauty rest' would leave my face glowing
but how could I sleep with incessant crowing?

Roosters! They're all the same, a fling and a game;
he spewed his loving words but left me in shame.
Raising chicks isn't easy and he's too cheap;
I've asked for support but haven't heard a peep.

Chicks need a Dad to teach them the ways of bugs
and encourage their lives and give tender hugs.
"You're the only hen for me", that's what he said,
but then I saw him chase a Rhode Island Red.

( In case you don't know, a Rhode Island Red is a type of chicken.)
