Sheets of rain fell from the darkened sky. The clouds hung thick and low, hiding the peaks of the mountains that formed a natural boundary on Joanne’s property. Hectares of grand old trees moaned in the wind, sending warnings as to what lurked at their feet.
Her heart drummed in her ears, and she was still not sure of what was at the window. A pallid face and unforgettable haunting eyes gazed at her; its expression nothing less than sinister. Ruby coloured lips curled back, revealing teeth that would be better suited to a beast rather than a man. Its mouth curved at the corners just before it disappeared quickly into the night. Joanne ran to her bedroom to collect her large metal rod that she affectionately referred to as ‘The Persuader’. She soundlessly dashed to the bathroom, closed the door and sat against it. Joanne quietened the panting of her breath to listen for any indication that she wasn’t alone. The dark played tricks with her mind, and shadows grasped at her with long fingers. She swallowed back her tears and remained hidden in the dark bathroom for a lifetime. Having heard no sign of entry from the menacing vision at her window, Joanne stood slowly. ‘The Persuader’ still in hand, she raced towards the front door, collected her car keys and was determined to leave this nightmare. She watched her reflection in the glass door, and saw herself pulled backward by shadows. An unseen hand grabbed at her waist and spun her back the way she had just run. Haunting eyes stared down into her soul; a smile straight from hell danced in front of her face. Before she had time to scream, its metallic breath warmed her neck and teeth pierced deep and true.
