My mission had begun. I was born for this. My new handler placed me in position. I had to wait now, but stay alert. It was dark and cold. I couldn't see much, but I felt how closed in I was. I was surrounded. There was a smell in the air, too. Or several, mixed together, and they were strong smells, rich and overpowering. Suddenly, I heard a noise.
"Say, you look good. I'd like to gobble you up!" "Who, wha-?" "Don't mind me, I'm just a bird brain!" The voice was irritatingly cheerful and much too loud for my taste. "Who are you? State your business." "I'm the bird, of course. Don't talon me!" came the chipper reply. Anger arose deep within me. Fury shook my body. "You can't be the bird. I'm the bird. I'm here on an-..." I froze; irritating considering I was trying to thaw. That bird was trying way too hard to be a bird. The word gobble, so subtly inserted into his sentence. Calling himself a bird brain. My voice was low and threatening as I said, "You're. No. Bird." The tension between us was thicker than stuffing. "I, eh..." uncertainty tainted his words. "Of course I'm a bird! I'm lighter than a feather, but I'm a bird." "You. Imposter," I spat. Then I did the only thing I could do. What I had to do. ... ... ... Eager to get the cooking started early, Mrs. Johnson comes into the kitchen to find both her tofurkey and turkey have fallen out of the refrigerator into a heap on the tile floor. Stuffing and other items from the fridge have fallen as well, making a huge mess. "Oh no!" she screeches. Her eyes widen and her hand comes to her mouth. "Thanksgiving is ruined!"
