GEEK
Leonard’s shoes clicked against the marble floors of the school halls. His glasses were thick and foggy and his body trembled in fear. Fear from the four punks that had tortured him for two years. Leonard was quiet. The room was close. Suddenly he felt a tug on his arm. He flew back opening the washroom door. A young man held him against the wall with three others behind. “Payments due today” he asked “Where is your lunch money?” Leonard stuttered “I.. I…it’s in my left hand pocket”. The boys name was Darcy and he grabbed the three dollars that was in Leonard’s pocket. Darcy, Matt, Tim and James all ran away as Leonard was left with no money and sore ribs. “How was school today son?” his father asked at the diner table. “Just fine Dad” he shrugged. His Dad started at him with a smile on his face which mad Leonard very uncomfortable. “This is you last year before high school son, so why don’t you try to enjoy yourself a little, make some friends meet girls or get in to trouble for crying out loud”. His mother sat there in shock. “Are you listening to me son?” his father went on “you just sit here all the time watching the god dam T.V, go outside and quit being a…” “GEEK” Leonard screamed out loud. His father knew it he was right. Tears ran down Leonard’s face. He slammed down his fork and ran to his room. His parents wouldn’t understand, they couldn’t understand. Those guys were never going to leave him alone and there was nothing anyone could do about it. The next day Leonard walked to school by himself as usual. The sun was bright but the air was cold. He walked into the schoolyard and was spotted by Darcy and his henchmen. Leonard panicked but stayed where he was, to avoid any more beatings. They approached him. “You know what I want Lenny” Darcy smiled. Leonard pulled a quarter out of his pocket. “This is not good enough geek Darcy spoke winking his eye at James who smashed Leonard in the face piercing his nose. He hit the ground like a brick. “I want that money tonight no excuses, I’ll be at your house at eight o’clock or else” Darcy and his boys walked away laughing wildly. It was like a breath of fresh air for Leonard at least for now until that night. The night was clam and peaceful. Leonard sat on the couch watching T.V and looking at the clock. It was 7:54. Time was running out. His parents were at the kitchen table talking. The noise from outside was not apparent until Leonard checked out the window and it was them. They had gathered on his front lawn, using it for their pissing ground. He walked outside shaking like a naked Eskimo. “Well, where is the money?” Darcy pushed him. “I don’t got it” he squirmed Darcy smiled as Matt jumped on Leonard’s back punching his head rapidly. His parents heard this and darted outside. “Get the hell off of my son,” his father yelled as he tossed Matt off of him. Leonard got up hurt but not badly. “This is not of your business old man” Darcy screamed. “When it involves my son it is”. There was a pause. Darcy was scared and his friends knew that he was. It was then he pulled out a silenced 45. and pointed it at Leonard’s fathers baldhead. Matt’s mouth dropped to his stomach. The gun went off twice. His father was down. His mother ran out screaming in horror, as her husband lay bloody and motionless on their front lawn. Darcy fired at her slating her brains on the cement stairs. Police sirens echoed from around the block. The four boys ran away and not a trace of them seen. Leonard lay there in tears watching them run away with his parent’s blood in his hands. Twenty years later Longsville was a small town with a population of about five thousand. A little girl ran through the supermarket passing shopping cart after shopping cart. Leonard picked her up and hugged her tightly. His body was much older and mature but he still wore thick black glasses. He now lived in this town with his wife and daughter. He walked down the frozen food section. “What do you want in here Nicole?” “Ice cream” she shouted with joy. Her eyes shot up as Leonard grabbed a big tub of chocolate ice cream. They headed to the cashier and Leonard pulled out his wallet. Something was strange. He spotted somebody looking at the cash in his wallet. It wasn’t that though, it was what he looked like. He was familiar. Their eyes met. It was a face from the past and Leonard knew it. Darcy. Last he had heard was that Darcy did time in juvenile hall for what had happened to his parents. His attempt to get a hold of him and break his fucking neck was cut short. He had Nicole with him and he didn’t want to make a scene in front of her and his wife Wendy would have a fit. He kept his cool and he held in his curiosity until he got home. The thought of calling the cops crossed his mind but that would lead into an expensive legal bill and could take years to settle. Leonard wanted revenge. That night he stayed up longer than he usually did. After Wendy went to bed he got out the phone book and looked for familiar shadows from the past. The pages surfed through his fingers as the gun shots smashed in his memory. Those bastards had been on the loose for this long and he had done nothing about it. Matt Thompson. He had spotted the name. Matt had lived in San Diego not far from Leonard’s town. He stayed awake that night thinking. Wendy’s eyes opened and she threw her arms around him. “Why are you still awake?” she asked admiring his charm “Are you ok?” “Yes dear, let me ask you something?” he spoke as Wendy sat up “Do you believe in god?” “Yes of course I do why?” “No reason” Leonard curled up on the side of the bed hoping that god was on his side. When Wendy woke up that morning Leonard was gone. It was earlier than usual but she knew he had to work. His car had a bad transmission and made an eerie sound going down the street. He arrived at a gun shop. Harry’s gun’s was one of the top branches in San Diego. The cashier that was working was a tall and stalky man with a long beard. He saw Leonard walk in with a serious look on his face. “What will it be sir?” Leonard fixed his glasses and searched the guns. “That silenced 45. please”. It was the gun that the four punks had killed his parents with and it was the gun that he wanted. The drive to Matt’s house was only about an hour. His house was small and brown and only had two windows. Leonard walked to the door with a gallon of gasoline in one hand and the 45. in the other. He tapped on the door with his gun. A tall man with shaggy red hair answered. “Are you Matt Thompson?” Leonard spoke out. “Yes” he replied. Leonard smiled but Matt didn’t recognize him. He shot him in the leg. Thompson hit the ground. There was a loud scream and the door shut. “Remember me Matt?” Thompson looked at him in pain. “It’s you but….” His words were cut short. Leonard had covered his lips with the gun. “It’s my turn now Matt”. Thompson’s wife ran out of the kitchen with her son in her arms. Leonard pointed the gun at her. “Now I want all of you to sit in a nice little circle and do exactly as you’re told”. They did what he said. “What do you want?” his wife cried. “You mean you don’t know?” Leonard laughed as he poured the gasoline on Matt and his family. “The only thing I am here for is revenge,” he pointed at Matt “You took my family from me and now I am taking yours”. The cries from Matt’s loving wife and son meant nothing to Leonard. He pulled out some matches and lit one up. Matt’s eyes shot up at the sound of the sulphur burning. “So long friend” He dropped the match. The place immediately caught on fire. Matt Thompson and his family of six years burnt up into flames along with the house as Leonard drove away. He pulled up in front of his home around twelve-thirty in the morning. Wendy was awake reading in the living room. Leonard walked in very seriously. Wendy jumped up. “Where were you?” there was a little anger in her voice. “Business” he said calmly. She looked at him for a second. She knew that he was harmless and she smiled. Leonard took off his jacket. It had been raining outside and he was soaked. It was then that Nicole came running out of her room. “Daddy your home” she said in joy “Look what I drew for you”. She pointed at the fridge. It was a picture of his parents. Her grandparents. The gunshots went off in his head again. Leonard hugged her. “It’s beautiful,” he said with a warm smile. Why would Nicole draw a picture of two people she had never seen before? Leonard brought her to her bed and kissed her goodnight. He stayed awake again that night looking up another name. James House. He remembered how tough he was. It wasn’t going to be easy. Leonard had packed his bags early that morning before his wife got up. She quickly awoke in curiosity “Where are you going?” she asked. “I have to go to Denver on a business trip but I will be back on Friday”. Wendy understood. Leonard was very successful in his work. She kissed him good-bye but as he got in his car she had a cold chill down her spine. James house held his brief case firmly in his hand as he headed up to the 20th floor of his apartment building. James loved being in high places because he loved to shoot the white seagulls with his pellet gun. The hallway was long and narrow and James was anxious to get in to watch the football game, which he had already missed the first quarter. The silver key slipped into the lock on his door. He opened it. James threw his keys on to the table and turned his head to the couch. Leonard was sitting there watching the football game. “Who the fuck are you?” James moved towards him. “Broncos are losing what a shame” Leonard smiled. “What do you want?” James was as close as he was going to get now. Leonard shot up. He has his gun in his hand pointed directly at James tall bulky figure. “Remember me?” His face was a person he knew that had been placed in the back of his head for a while. “Leonard” James jumped on him. The gun went off as the two scampered to the ground. The gun had glided to the kitchen. James threw Leonard on to the coffee table smashing the glasses on it. James darted for the gun but Leonard caught his foot and tripped him. They both got up. The gun was on the ground close to both of them. They looked at each other carefully. James went for the gun but Leonard kicked him in the face sending him back. Leonard grabbed the gun and once again pointed it at him. James put up his hands in mercy. “You got me Leonard, but killing me isn’t going to bring back your parents.” Leonard stood there not a word in his mouth had come out. The silence was only for a while. James came at Leonard again and grabbed the gun. He picked up Leonard again and grabbed the gun. He picked up Leonard and carried him to the balcony. Leonard tried to fight but James was too powerful. “You gonna die now Geek.” James tried to push him over the 20th story balcony. Leonard looked for some kind of opening. He kicked James in the balls. The pain was sent throughout his body as he let his grip go. Leonard got up and got the gun. That would be too easy to shoot him. He grabbed James by the shirt. “Say hi to Matt for me” he said as he tossed James down the apartment on to the parking lot. The blood streamed off the sidewalk. “Can I get a pack of cigarettes please?” said a thin man with fuzzy brown hair. The cashier passed him the cigarettes as he walked out. His car had still been running. The man ran into his car and avoided the rain. He got in. The car was cold so he blew on his hands to warm them up. He felt something tickle his head. It pinched the hairs on his neck. Then a familiar face popped up from the back seat. It was Leonard with the silence 45 compressed against his next victims head. Tim. Tim tried to look back but the voice told him to keep his head up and his mouth shut. “What do you want, what did I do?” Tim shouted. He always was paranoid over things. Leonard spoke up. “I’m going to make this short and sweet, cause you weren’t ever as bad as the others.” The gun went off taking half of Tim’s head to the windshield of the car. Nicole woke up in the middle of the night that night with a scary dream. She dreamt that her Daddy got killed. Wendy went in her room and told her everything was fine but there was an uneasiness in her stomach. Leonard came home the next day. His face was a little bruised because of the struggle he had with James. Wendy was happy to see him alive. “How was you trip?” she asked. “Fine” Leonard looked at her and smiled “ but I missed you dear.” She gave him a big hug. Her arms held him like she was never going to see him again. Nicole came running out of the living room. Leonard was happy but still not satisfied. It was a cold night so Wendy wrapped Nicole up in two blankets. Leonard was asleep early that night and Wendy couldn’t blame him, he had a long flight that day. The house was quiet not a sound was heard just the tap on the kitchen sink dripping profusely. Wendy had fell asleep with a book in her hand and Leonard was curled up on the side of the bed. A noise got Leonard up and it was coming from downstairs. He quickly got out of bed and put on his bathrobe and grabbed his gun. The stairs creaked as he walked down. The back door was open. Leonard ran and shut it. The door was usually always locked. He thought nothing of it. Then a sharp pain twisted in his kidney. A knife had been jabbed in his side. He turned around and saw Darcy smiling with his greased back ponytail. Leonard smashed him in cheek with his fist. Darcy came back and threw him against the wall. He ran upstairs as Leonard lay in pain. He headed to the bedroom where Wendy was sleeping. He grabbed her and dragged her out of bed and down the stairs to the back door. Leonard was gone. Darcy’s eyes searched all over. He put his knife to Wendy jugular. “I’m going to kill this bitch you geek, come on you geek get out here.” Nobody came and Darcy was frustrated. “Come on geek” he yelled again. Wendy was crying. She had no idea who this was and why he was holding a knife to her neck. A foot came out hitting the knife out of his hands. Leonard picked it up. Darcy let Wendy go. “Come on Lenny, you and me” Darcy circled around “You parents died like pigs, it was fun cause it was so easy.” Leonard’s eyes began to water. Tears came down his face. The anger had built up for to many years. He threw the knife and it stuck into Darcy’s neck squirting blood everywhere. He then shot him and shot him. He couldn’t control his finger it just kept going off. Darcy dropped on the ground, dead instantly. Leonard hugged his wife. He knew that the nightmare was over. THE END
