New Prompt! I see that Sophie had the Crampers write about shopping on Black Friday, but I’m going to have you do it again. That’s because, for the first time ever, I actually got up early and went to stand in one of those lines. I left my house at the ridiculous Saturday hour of 5:15 a.m., thinking I’d be the only one in the K Mart parking lot. Boy was I mistaken. As I parked, I shook my head and groaned. The group of perspective shoppers was already completely curled around the K Mart building and had herded itself down the curved sidewalk in front of the closed pizza parlor, the fancy Italian restaurant, the health food store and across the opening to Von’s Grocery store. Feeling silly, I added my body to the swelling mass of coffee-drinking, cold-shivering, eager groupies and began my wait. What happened during that 45 minutes of standing proved eye-opening. I have my own version, but I’d like to hear yours (or the imagination of your recall.) What did you learn by standing in the morning’s chilly air? Who did you meet? What were the conversations like? Would you do it again? What happened BEFORE the sale is your prompt for today. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE RACKET IN THE LINE!! The noisy chick with waist-long hair waved coupons tight in hands; the screaming boy with Colgate-breath dressed out in the name brands!! Consumers in that hopeful crowd just waiting to get in unscathed and unapproachable, their patience TRIED TOO THIN. The racket swirled all around me in a loud, screaming roar with all the buyers growling as we waited at the door! The hectic early morning pace alarmed my timid soul as I followed this rabid crowd as we pursued our goal. Good will did NOT abound around that raucous pressing mob and I did not envy the waiting sales clerks their jobs! There's always one in ev'ry crowd: a noisy know-it-all who rushes doors and storms right in! We even had to call security to calm the throng; they made us all sit down and drink cold coffee, mad, while they could apprehend that clown I never will go back to try to buy gifts on the cheap-- next year I will just wait my turn and get my beauty sleep!
