A SONG OF MY HERO'S LIFE

I knew that I would have you in my life
the first time that I saw your lilting smile
but never thought to think I'd be your wife
till I had seen  you toil yet one more mile

for anyone who seemed to need your aid
You always gave not caring what the cost:
mankind, "the cause," my kin, friends/foes. You stayed
when most would not have cared and I'd have lost

my faithful friend who always by me stood
though there were times when grief was all I gave!
Your giving up I would have understood
You, in wisdom, gentleness instead were brave

What force does not let you capitulate
but keeps you showering love instead of hate?
