On Christmas Day, when my brother Bobby snuck downstairs to look under the tree, a woof, woof was heard, and a puppy leapt up on him wagging his tale and whining an affectionate whine.

"You did it God; you did it my friend," cried Bobby.

My brother Bobby wanted the puppy for his 5th Christmas, but our family was in the middle of a recession and just couldn't afford one. My dad had been laid off and was behind in the mortgage payments, and neither mom nor dad could find work. I earned too little working a paper route to make a difference. The puppy Bobby let everyone know he wanted was a cocker spaniel just like his friend, Jimmy, received last Christmas.

"We're sorry Bobby," everyone was saying during the Holiday season, "But puppies grow up and they need a lot of care and good food and stuff."

"I will take care of it; I'll get the food, leash, collar and everything," said Bobby.

Our family, especially Mom, sympathized with my brother, but our budget provided for shelter and food and not thing more. There was absolutely no way we could get Bobby a puppy. That is what we believed, and that was what we knew.

We knew we were too poor to buy a puppy until a Christmas surprise happened. A neighbor mentioned to dad a few days prior to Christmas that the animal shelter was giving away some pets for free, so dad went to the refuge to check out what he learned. He found that some animals were given away to qualified pet lovers. Dad asked about a puppy, but there were only somewhat older dogs; he left his information on a list and went home.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday before Christmas Saturday went by without any of us considering exchanging presents that year. On Friday before Christmas, dad was called by the shelter and was told that there was a cocker spaniel puppy given them due to the owner moving abroad in an emergency.

Dad rushed to the shelter and was overwhelmed at the sight he saw, a jet black cocker wagging his tail and having a shinning coat with a brilliant healthy look. The Vet told dad the puppy was ready to go providing he could show proof of his income. As dad was unemployed, he couldn't.

"That is just what I suspected. Would you step over here, sir?"

The two of them went to the office and sat down.

"I have looked over your application, and called the business you listed. They said you were let go two months ago due to a payroll cut. I was sorry to have learned that, Mr. Jensen, but if you really want a job, I have one for you. I learned you are familiar with the double entry bookkeeping method and could put you to work as our bookkeeper. Mrs. Franks, the help we have had for 19 years, will be retiring on Christmas.

After working three years at the shelter, dad received a bonus. Sparky the cocker had grown up and besides the dog, Bobby had two turtles, two parakeets, a cat and a hamster.
