                                       JOURNEY’S END

There couldn’t have been a worse time to have to take this journey.  Her back ached.  This was not a comfortable ride at best and this was surely the worst.  She longed to stop and rest but there wasn’t time because it would be dark soon.

Her husband  was tired, too, she knew. Complaining would not help either one of them.  The baby moved and she shifted her position.. What if the baby came before they got back home?  The way she felt right then, it might happen.  She did not want it to happen far away from her mother and from home.  Her husband wouldn’t know how to help her.

It was easy for those people in the government to make laws that forced people into situations like this.  They sat at their desks and sent out their proclamations without a thought of the  trouble they caused people like her and her husband.

There was a sharp pain and she wondered if that was the start of the birth.  Her mother would know but her mother was far away.

She felt tears starting.  Her mind kept asking ‘are we there yet?’

When they reached the town they fiund the population multiplied by so many others on the same errand.  But at least they had arrived, soon she could rest.

Her heart sank as she heard the landlord of the little hotel.  “I’m sorry but we’re full up tonight.”

She listened as her husband pleaded.  “Look at her, she’s exhausted.  Please help us!”

“I’m sorry. The best I can do is the stable out back.”
