January 1, 2010
Dear Me, I WON! I WON! Read below to claim the prize! This is the Life Purpose Department, located in the small corner of my brain just past the 90% that is useless to me, writing to let me know that I have NOT won a prize as stated in red above. (I had to do SOMETHING to get myself to read this letter, right? What better than the prospect of a prize!) As per the usual for these letters that I send myself every year, I am going to start off with a bit of encouragement. The last year has been very tough on me and I am very proud of myself for being as strong as I have been. Dad’s death was expected but was quicker than anyone (even doctors) had thought. I dealt with the pain, became stronger, and I didn’t lose myself in the thought of losing yet another loved one to cancer. That says a lot about just how strong a person I am, and if ever I doubt it, I will look back at that and know that I am strong. The move to Vermont was also not as easy as planned, but I handled all speed bumps along the way with grace. I acted an adult even when elders did not. Once again, that says a lot about just how strong a person I am. So being a strong person, I know that I can handle the myriad of things that I have on my plate for the coming year. Not only can I handle them, but I can achieve more by applying myself and working hard to achieve my goals. So just what do I have to work on this year? Let’s see! I can’t believe I’m getting married! I am so happy and thrilled but also nervous and just a little bit scared about that. There is a dress to pick, place settings to look through, invitations to send and reservations to book. And that’s just the cake topper on the cake! Oh yeah, I have to get a cake, too! I’ve started my list of things that need to be done, and I am staying very organized and levelheaded. My goal this year for my wedding is to let others help me whenever I can and to NOT be controlling or feel like I have to do it all myself – because I don’t! As for school, I am going to do great this year! I applied myself very well last semester and I was happy about my grades (for the most part.) This year, one goal is to designate specified time slots for study at least 5 days a week while classes are in session. I know that the school tells me I can pass with a C+ in any class, but I know that I can do better than that and I will. My other goal is to pass every class I take with at least a B+. One of the biggest goals for 2010 was going to be to find a new job. BUT! I was ahead of the game and started a new job less than a month ago. This is an exciting and fun opportunity and is a better job than I was hoping for! My goal for my new job is to apply myself. If I can do something better, then I will do it better. And if I need help to make something better, then I will ask for it. My writing, as usual, is always something that I have goals for. I usually want to write a certain number of pages a day, submit work every week, or write a huge number of poems a month. This year, that isn’t going to be possible. I just have too much on my plate to make goals like that and keep them realistic. So my one goal for 2010 with regards to my writing will be to just do what I can. If I have a couple hours a few times a week, then I will write. And if I don’t, then I will at least jot down notes so I can work on it when I DO have the time. I write best when it’s not forced, and I won’t force myself to write this year. So as soon as I am done writing this letter to myself, it’s time to pick up the color coded Sharpies and go to town on my wall calendar. Wedding planning dates, business travel, school work and final exams, and even a writing contest deadline or two... I’ll add it all. And working hard to achieve my goals will make 2010 the best year yet! Sincerely (and until next year), The Tiny Little Part of My Brain That Motivates Me Written for:
