Sandman Waits

Hush my child
And don’t you wake.
Sandman comes
When evening breaks.

He comes for you,
As I have told,
To claim your eyes
And steal your soul.

If he knocks on your window,
Tap, tap, tap
Don’t let him in
And fall for his trap.

Because if you do,
I find fair to warn,
He’ll take you away
To never see morn’.

He’ll creep to your bed,
With sand in his hand,
And promise to take you
To a wondrous land.

A land filled with
Little girls and boys,
And filled with
Dreams, wonders, and toys.

And if you fall
For his magical lies,
It won’t be long
Before he steals your eyes.

And when he does,
It is fair to tell,
It won’t be good,
And it won’t be swell.

He’ll bring you to a land
With deserts and bogs,
And leave you helpless
With his ravenous dogs.

And when you know what he’s done
It’ll be too late
Because he’ll cage you in
And lock the gate.

He’ll give them your eyes,
Just as a treat.
Then they’ll come after you
For your good meat.

And then you may
Remember the time
When I had told you
This helpful rhyme.

And as they eat you,
Sandman’ll watch with a smile
And say, “Be good my pups,
I’ll be back after while.”

And when they devour you,
Right down to the bone,
They’ll howl and they’ll bark
In a sinister tone.

So heed my warning,
My darling dear,
And don’t let the Sandman
Ever come near.

Be good for me, child,
What I say is true,
Because if you don’t
Sandman will come for you.
