The Girl with the Heavenly Smile
By Indelibleink A field behind the church is where we first met, The apparent randomness of our meeting is hard to forget. Was the middle of August, a cool day for the season, I feel God had us meet behind the church for a reason. A group of six or eight, we chatted for a quite a while, But I was enchanted by the girl with the heavenly smile. I was seventeen, she was a couple of years younger, And, as of that day, I acquired an insatiable hunger. Before her, of course, there were others I'd dated, After meeting my love, interest in those girls abated. It's hard to describe how, when her eyes met mine, Things would get better; things would become fine. From an oft-challenged family I was always in trouble, With school, with the law, seemingly always on the bubble. By anyone's thinking, I'd be classified as "bad," Forever going at it with an alcoholic dad. Seven years later, at the church where we met, We exchanged wedding vows, and who would have bet? That I'd be so lucky to have an angel for a mate, Tell me God didn't help in determining my fate! But, truth be told, I wasn't always nice to my lady, Was involved in some things best described as "shady." On numerous occasions, I gave her just cause to leave, Yet she saw a shred of good, still hard to believe. Over the course of time, as our lives unfurled, Blessed, bringing three babies into the world. And thanks to her strength, love, and will, Three wonderful adults who adore her still. Decades have passed; we're so much older than then, Yet my heart races daily when I see her again. Still together all these years later, who would have guessed, I still thank God for letting me be so thoroughly blessed. Been quite some time since I've thought of her as "wife." When so many times, she's helped straighten out my life. Life without her would be life in exile, No life at all without her heavenly smile.
