I wake up to find him here again. Always sitting in that same spot as if he knows that today is going to be the day. Always waiting for that final ounce of me to give way and slip into the unknown.
I have seen him for three weeks. The three weeks i have been here. I used to be afraid of him, afraid of the way that without seeing his face you could tell he was staring at me, waiting for me to do something.
As time went by, however, I began to enjoy his company. To have him here meant that I wasn't alone anymore. I wasn't stuck alone with the beeping annoyance of the machine. I did not have to think about the crash as much. Somebody still enjoyed my company. Even with the feeling of importance he brought, i still would not speak to him.
After a few hours of thinking it over, I finally decided tonight was the night to see why he was always here.
"Hello." I said in a quiet voice.
"Hello." He said in a soothing tone.
"Not that i don't enjoy your company, but why do you visit me every night?" I asked a little more confidently.
"Why ask me what you don't want to know? Ask me a question you really want the answer too."
I thought for awhile then finally asked "What is your name?"
"Depends who you ask. I have gone by many names over the years but you may call me the walker."
"Alright, Have you been sent here to take me?" I asked with slight hesitation.
"I believe the doctor said you are going to make a full recovery." The walker said. his tone changing from soothing to a sad tone.
I couldn't believe what he was saying. Why would he come here every night and sit here if he wasn't here to take me away?
"But I saw you during the crash" I said with some agitation. "And you have been here since the crash. Why would you waste your time sitting here if you weren't sent here to take me?
"The title of Walker in the Dark does not mean I only to take people away. I am also sent to the places i am needed to help others deal with what my job entails. I am not here for you. I am only here to give you a message." He said his voice falling deeper and deeper into the sadness that had been leaking out of since I asked if he was here for me.
"Who would give me a message from where you come from?" I asked.
"You know who. She wanted me to tell you that she forgives you. She doesn't blame you for what happened to her. She knows it was the drunk driver in the other car that swerved causing you to swerve and hit the tree"
I sat up and looked at him.
"Who? Who would say that?"
He looked into my eyes with a sad look on his face.
"Jamie. She was behind the tree waiting for her on the porch waiting for her dad. I doubt you even saw her."
Then he was gone.
The next morning the doctor walked in to see how i was doing.
"How are you feeling?" He asked as he examined my chart.
"Better."
He smiled and said, "That's good to hear. In a few more days we will get you out of here. He started to walk out but i asked him, "Doctor, was anyone else hurt in the crash?"
He looked at me and stared at me for a few seconds. Staring as if he couldn't believe how i could ask such a question. As if i should know the answer.
"Yes. Jamie was killed. The tree you hit tip over and she was killed instantly. We told you all of this you don't remember?"
"No... My god, where are her parents? Can i see them?"
His jaw dropped and his eyes began to show a mixture of pity and surprise.
"Mr.Thompson. Jamie was your daughter."
